Why drive a F350 dually 365 days a year if you only need to tow a big load ten times?

I wouldn't see these devices as cutting into commercial towing but they would certainly make sense for guys with F150s that need a bit more towing capacity to move a horse trailer or camper.

With 10,000 lbs or better towing capacity from a half ton, why not get a trailer that fits the truck? If you NEED a big trailer a few times a year perhaps hiring someone to pull it would be a wise idea. Or make 2 trips with a smaller trailer that is properly sized to the tow vehicle.

Those tow dollies seem like a weak compromise at best.

I watched the video again. In a backing up scene, I'm almost certain I saw a tag on the dolly. Meaning doubles.

I'm not in the market myself but these dolly things did seem like one reasonable option for moving a bigger trailer than typically moved with a F150 or Tundra etc. I'm not advocating for it and I've never seen one but the physics seem to make sense. At least a couple of companies make the things and I haven't seen any Youtubes of disasters. Agree with you that if you just need to move a big trailer a couple times a year it would be best to hire that job out. These dolly things cost close to $10K. However, if you had your heart set on a fifth wheel camper and your tow vehicle is an Excursion, these dolly's just might be the thing.

Looks like 28 states allow some sort of non commercial doubles.

As someone mentioned, there are restrictions on some being that 1st trailer must be a 5th wheel, and some states limit the Thur trailer to only pulling recreational vehicles like atv or boats.

In Canada its apparently considered part of the truck or trailer:

The Automated Safety Hitch System is USDOT certified, and is in the certification process in the Canadian provinces. Quebec province considers the Automated Safety Hitch System as part of the trailer, and all remaining provinces consider the Automated Safety Hitch System as part of the truck.
I don't see a plate in the backing video, but I might have missed it.

I also found this on another forum:

Included with each unit sold is a notarized letter indicating the regulatory compliance in 9 continents and regions stating that the Automated Safety Hitch System is classified as a lift/drop axle, not as a trailer. Therefore, registration with state and county motor vehicle departments is not required. The letter also states that the additional seven to nine feet should not be added because “the length of devices determined to be necessary for safe and efficient operation should be excluded.” Several states have laws that exempt the lift/drop axle from the length limitation. Jamieson said that none of his customers have reported being ticketed for length violations and that was confirmed by the customers I interviewed for this report. Customers surveyed also revealed that the Safety Hitch has been used in nearly every state and in Canada without any problem. There are additional links below covering state RV length laws. If unsure, contact your local state agency.
