The tractor should be fine running right with out being connected ?
Just to be real clear - Until you get a loopback hose installed you can't start the tractor to drive it over near the plow.

If the tractor and plow are still close enough to re-attach the plow's disconnects back onto the tractor - then in that case the fluid would have a return path, and you could test the pump.

Don't start the engine without some sort of a loopback path for the fluid.

Great! Thanks for clearing that up! After I dropped the plow I did drive it around some. I didn't know

will be interesting to see what if anything you broke by doing this. Looking at your pump, I don't see where a key would go.. Hoye may have been able to answer this for you

The pump was dead headed so key will be sheared. If it isn't the pump probably copped it and may not pump properly.

Today I will take the pump back out and look for the key. I will take pics.

The other thing that is weird is that I do not see the o ring or the gasket from pump to motor.

I see the key on that pump as well but there is no slit on that nut for a key.

I've been following along and learning by everyones comments. I am glad you found the issue. Hopefully it is a simple fix from here. Granted, you need to clean up the keyway slot on the pump shaft. I am wondering if there is some sort of relief safety that can be put in place so this doesn't dead head the pump again. I am relieved for you too!

I am relieved to but this key is stuck in the shaft bad. Best way to remove it with out breaking the shaft? Drill? It's not magnetic ImageUploadedByTapatalk1457018597.783162.jpg

Try getting the shaft Hot and use a Chisel. Worst case take the pump to a Machine shop while your out getting the loop made. They can get it out and also will most likely have a key. :D

It is a woodruff key. Support the shaft, tap one end down with a pin punch, the other end will come up. Grab it with a pair of vise grip pliers.

Yup! seen that also. Plus there may be wear to the outer grove in the Hex bolt. I think a Machine shop is sounding like a smart thing to do. The outer Bolt has to have or most likely has wear from spinning. That's evident, that way you know that the key is snug fitting and the bolt also. It won't stand a chance of not shearing again if it's loose.
