If it is something that will kill someone if it would ever take flight, I strap it. I have no control over vehicles that could hit me and send my stuff flying. At least if I have it strapped the person that hits me can take full responsibility. If I don't have my load secured and becomes an issue during a collision, that is my fault and I'll be held responsible.

I have no desire to kill anyone by accident or otherwise.

I'm not saying it shouldn't be done, or that not strapping it down isn't dangerous, just curious as to how many do. I would venture to guess that < 10% of people actually do that.

You are right about that. I'm not a safety freak or anything but i don't want to deal with stuff around. We have lost 3 ladders because we thought they we strapped good enough with multiple bungies. Never had a problem in years after years but in the last two years lost 3. Now we used ratchet straps bungies and cables

I once forgot my rechargeable drill on my tailgate and went down the road not realizing the tailgate was open. Lost my drill and battery. Cost me $120 to replace. My windshield's rear view mirror now sets at an angle like so >> \ so I can see the tailgate easily in the mirror...

Then we also have a Chevy. Have had the tailgate latch brake many times. A few times it has fallen but that was at low speeds. The bad part is with tool boxes you can't see the tailgate

The grapple is slid all the way forward in the bed, and has a spare tire wedging it there from behind, but I'm not going to strap it.

I also run with scissors, swim right after eating and occasionally, if I'm feeling really ballsy, walk around with a ball-point pen in my shirt pocket without a pocket protector!!!

None of those things are going to harm anyone but you most likely. A semi runs you off the road and your unsecured grapple or spare tire goes flying into a schoolbus of kids, you deserve the worst johnny-law can come up with.

It is one thing to be in a hurry and not think about it, but to have an entire text-based conversation about it on an internet forum rather than taking a moment to go ahead and put some sort of strap or rope on it is pure laziness.

My pet peeve is how pickups have poor tie down points. My 06 F 350 has loops in each corner but they are hard to reach because of the bed liner. Why don't trucks come with better attachment points, both high and low? I hauled a load of college furniture this weekend and it was hard to find anywhere to attach ropes or straps. I did bolt some self retracting ratcheting straps (like seat belts) to the floor of my bed in each corner. I use them all the time. Even when hauling something small like a 5 gallon diesel container it allows me to strap it down to prevent it from sliding around. Wish trucks were better equipped for tie down points and retractable straps.
