Who rides motorcycles?

can't ride a bike/ motorcyle, but I intend to purchase a used Holda Goldwing TRIKE with Lehman conversion kit, in the next 5 yrs. I have an ATV though.

I put a few miles a year on my trusty old Yamaha XS650. It's a '79 Special that's been cleaned up a little, added electronic ignition and better shocks on the rear, got rid of the cheesy plastic emblems and rototiller bars.

Did it come with dual points originally Paul ? I remember push starting a friend on a Yammy of that vintage, as he had some "challenges" with the dual points - got it going that morning - at that point (pun intended), the bike was doing better than us - sober, but as we had been up all night, pushing the bike for half a block while in gear (the only way it would start) was a bit more of a workout than I was looking for that morning.

Old bikes, like cars, bring back lots of great memories.

Sunday was the start of this years Iron Butt Rally, a cross between an Easter egg hunt and an endurance run for die hard motorcyclists. This year's theme is 50 parks in 25 states, with the winner visiting as many parks as possible during the 11 day duration of the event. There's a new commentator this year offering lively recounts of each day's events, and a map tracking the positions of the riders. Fun if you're into watching other people suffer.:laughing:

Yep, '79 was the last year of the points machines. In 1980 they went to TCI.

I had a '74 I bought new and rode for most of 10 years. Don't believe I ever had the points cover off it.

I bought this '79 in the Fall of 2010 and rode it for a bit over a year with the original ignition, but when it came time for a fresh set of points I installed a PAMCO electronic unit and never looked back. It does still have mechanical advance, but if you keep the flyweight arms lubed, that's pretty idiot-proof.

Iron Butt Rally - 2015

A lady from work is competing in it this year for the second time. I can't imagine the discomfort, mental and physical fatigue involved in riding 11,000 miles in 11 days.

My riding days are over due to age and a bad hip and knee. I was a motorcycle nut for most of my life. I started out on a 1966 RD 100 Yamaha dad purchased from a local farmer. Road all over the farm and then trail road with it even though it was a road bike. Next two bikes were an SL 175 Honda and then a 175 Yamaha Enduro. After I grew up and started riding on the road I got a 69 CB 350 Honda and rode that until a 77 CB 750 Super Sport. Next was a 1980 GL 1100, 1984 GL 1200, 1996 Kawasaki Vulcan, and finally my last bike a 2001 Ultra Classic. I look back on those years fondly and still love bikes. Just can't do it anymore. When I mention to my wife a trike she says no.

SO and I both have a couple of IB plates for Saddle Sore runs. I have a little over 200,000 miles of riding experience, but that pales in view of hers. She's the one that got me into riding beginning at age 57. One's never too late to enjoy the pleasures of life. Here's a picture of our rides:
