When I was much younger and it was multiple miles to the next house, I sometimes would shoot things to see if I could hit them...with a .22.
Now, when I pull the trigger, I either expect something to die quickly, or to better understand/adjust the scope sighting.
With current cost of ammo and my opportunities for other diversions, shooting to hear something go "bang" isn't on my to do list. Certainly not at midnight and shooting into the air.
