We have 4 Ecoboost trucks now. Me, my father, BIL, and uncle. Mine has 47,000 miles, my uncles has 40,000 miles, and my father and BIL are both under 10,000 miles. Not a single hiccup from any of them and none of us plan on a single modification.

About 70% of the F150 trucks sold since 2011 are Ecoboost. F150's are the best selling vehicle in the world. If there were major issues it would be big news. Right now it's Internet lore.

Chris
While I don't doubt the EB is a good motor, if it was internet lore, why did Ford release a service bulletin on it? Must be some validity to it.

How can it win the comparison test if it cant (legally) haul their test load? Their 1000# test load puts the Ram 40# overweight (payload is 960#) before the driver even gets in the truck. Aaron Z

I have no idea why or how Ram won. I'm curious as well.

One of my coworkers got a new F-150 / Ecoboost back in September, and his engine went into some sort of limp mode while driving in the rain on the highway. Truck was only about a week old at that point. His dealer reset the computer and made another fix under warranty, and the problem hasn't reoccured. However, he was pretty irritated. He uses the truck for a side business (paintless dent repair, etc.) and was not happy about losing the time it took to deal with the problem. After reading what Eric posted about the issue in another thread, I googled the problem and it's pretty well known. I would have thought Ford would have put a permanent fix in place by now, so maybe it's a fairly low risk of occurrence and best dealt with case by case with a service bulletin.

Your friend needs to drill a 1/16th inch hole at the bottom of the intercooler. This way, water that condenses in the intercooler blows out before being ingested and causing a misfire that puts the computer into a lump home mode.

This has been an issue since 2011, and my weep hole solution has fixed a buch of people's trucks.

Ford has been trying to fix the problem by increasingly narrowing the spark plug gap, and by making the intercoolers less efficient through the installation of covers, or by installing smaller intercoolers.

What OEMs cannot do often because of emissions laws or fear of lawsuit is the obvious: if water is forming in the intercooler due to pressure drop, then let the water out. Drilling a hole in the intercooler is an old tuning trick.

You don't notice a boost leak when putting a hole in an intercooler?

That's what I was wondering, though I'm sure with the high volume of air going through with relatively low pressure, it's probably negligible.

I wonder if it would be possible to weld/braze on a bung and install a normally open valve that would close when the truck is running... though maybe not necessary. That would almost seem like something that would be factory.

Ya, maybe they have low boost pressure, but I know on my big trucks you know RIGHT AWAY when you get the slightest boost leak.

The only time a simple hole won't cut it is if you plan to do water or flood crossings. In the case of water crossings, then tap in a nipple, put a hose on it run it up high and put a check valve on the end.
