I actually took the class many years ago and had my paperwork ready to go. I just could not force myself to submit the forms and "register" myself with the government as a firearm owner.

There's no need to keep whipping this dead horse, so I'll close with just this ....

IF I am ever sitting on a jury for someone who is simply accused of carrying without a license ... the guy is NOT GUILTY. PERIOD.

It isn't necessary, for two reasons.

1) I was picked for a jury in a landlord tenant dispute. When asked during voir dire if I thought owners or renters caused more 'problems' I replied that in my experience renters vastly outnumber owners causing damage to the home they occupy. They kept me.

2) The specific question that might trigger your situation might never arise.

Not necessarily. But, to prevent an injustice ... I might. After all, isn't a jury supposed to be comprised of ones peers? if a jury is seated with a bunch of sheep that will enforce any law the judge says they must - then where is any check/balance for citizens to stop oppression? No - I'm not saying every law necessitates a jury of malcontents to stand up to big brother. I am saying - there is a time and a place for courageous citizens to do their duty and tell the judge and the law to go pound sand.

This is really not rocket science. If you think I'm taking an extreme stand, I suggest you go back and study a little of our history.

I would guess that most of us that have read and replied to this thread agree and support the second amendment, that is the "law of the land". Some disagree with having to take a class and permits. I have been around weapons/guns most of my life and all of my adult life. Like many of you I was taught safety and use by my father and other adult family members and I in turn have also introduced my children to them for no other reason than safety. But even with all of the experience I have had I took the NRA safety class to get my permit and so have my 3 older children, the 2 younger will be of age and plan on taking the class and applying for permits next summer. The point that I want you to understand is there is a proper way to learn about guns most of us learned from a parent or responsible adult some time in our life, the closest to gun education many of todays youth receive is from a second rate Hollywood movie or a video game.

Texas CHL also requires passing background check by both Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and FBI so not as "automatic" as it sounds. Expect that there are similar requirements in most other states?

San Diego and Los Angeles (about 7 million people?) do not grant CCW license, even after the courts said they had to and they agreed to do so.

I wasn't thinking California. Here you go to class see the court clerk pay your money get fingerprinted. 45 days if you have good character they send your permit. You guys can't fart without without a scrubber or a greenhouse gas permit can you? LOL

It was relatively easy to get a CCW in Washington State and I didn't mind the background check. Not crazy about paying to keep it renewed but agree that the cost at least, and only cover the cost of processing. I was actually surprised that no competency test was required. Just background and fingerprinting and I think about $50. I will find out the latest shortly as I lost my wallet and so I need a new permit. What a pain. Maybe an endorsement on your driver's license could be an alternative. That way when/if you have to show your ID to the LEO, they will know your standing. Is that a bad idea? Now one needs/should remember to tell the LEO and it can be awkward.

After you get your permit that should be good for buying guns too. No need to get another check just to buy...

Instead of the 2nd Amendment ---- Shift your thoughts to attending the church of your choice, or expressing a political opinion ---- Still think a background check, fingerprinting and paying to exercise your rights is a good idea? Your rights are your rights UNTIL you do something to surrender them. You should NEVER be burdened to exercise any of your rights "unless" you have abused them to the harm of others.

One only needs to read a few of the comments in this thread to get an appreciation for how far we have slipped from the courage and wisdom of our founders.
