I have a small area about 1/2 acre that is mainly small shrubs, small trees and vines. I want to clear it out (leaving the larger trees) and level it out. I want to use the area as a little camp site since it will be right next to our pond.

I have a Ford 1900 tractor with FEL and a 5' Bush Hog

What would you suggest i use to clear this out with? Should I rent something to do it? Or would the tractor do the job and if so what attachments or anything would i need?

How heavy duty is your cutter??

Even lighter duty should handle 1" or so saplings.

I'd just start backing into the brush and lowering the cutter into it. That is of course if its too thick to drive through.

Its a Bush hog squealer, not sure how heavy duty that is. I am more worried about fence and old metal stakes, (this is part of an old railroad bed)

You should be worried. A metal stake could be expelled from the Squealer with sufficient energy to kill someone.

Be safe. Use a Ratchet Rake.

+1 for the ratchet rake. I use mine first over a new area then go back with the cutter.

I would start with a weedeater (Sthil FS110 or better) with a 4 cornered blade on it and clear enough to walk the property and clear around any such hazards, then back over whats left with the bushhog.

I would walk before using anything like a ratchet rake to find anything that might punch holes in my tires.

1/2 acre shouldn't take you very long to walk over pretty good, a metal detector my be fun and useful too. If the brush is small, I would just use my bucket to blade it out. or buy a rachet rake as suggested, but me Id have it bladed faster than I could get to town.

You could use a ratchet rake and then brush hog the area, or rent a CTL with a hydraulic brush hog (shredder). A hydraulic shredder will easily cut up to 3" material and make short work of the job.

I'm clearing this 1 acre overgrown pasture with a ratchet rake, and grapple. The ratchet rake is one of the most useful attachments, especially for the money.
