good evening we had 1/2 inch rain last night,sunny today with a high of 69 today.

Good evening. It was another bright, sunny day, about 70*.

Still no frost and none in the 10 day forecast. Nearby Farmington recorded 29.6* on 9/17 but we didn't get that here, so it must have been pretty localized.

Went out and worked on my field clearing project this afternoon. Got stuck for a while trying to dig out a drainage swale in a wet corner. After several tries I managed to get the backend up and swung to solid ground with the hoe.

Don't know what's up with that corner or if it is going to be worthwhile trying to use it. It's pretty wet. When the 60K lb timber harvester went through there it left 2' deep parallel frog ponds behind. :laughing: Might be a good place for a little wildlife pond.

You sure lucked out on the frost thing this year. Aroostook frosted a month ago and it's getting cold at night there. I recall an occasional frost at the end of August every now and then near Dover-Foxcroft. In Ohio, as you know, it's still 80 on a good day.

Question on the rain in parts of Texas--when it rains 4 1/2" over a short time after months of draught, does any of it soak in or does it just wash the topsoil away into the low spots? Is the ground packed hard as a rock?

That's a good idea. Unfortunately the ruts are among many stumps, not to mention some rocks, and the ground is so wet I can't get to the stumps to dig them out. It would be a simple job for a tracked excavator and it may have to wait for that. I have been cleaning up the edges, stacking loose limbs and brush, and digging stumps here and there just to see what soils are there, but next summer I plan on hiring some excavator work.

I wanted to see if I could dry that corner out some with a swale so I could decide what I might do with it. It's not a large area but it is wet. We haven't had much rain in the past couple weeks and there is water standing in the ruts. I'm guessing it will never be dry enough to mess with as a field or pasture area. When the excavator is here, I'll have him dig down to see what kind of soil depth is there, maybe put in small pond and use the soil elsewhere for fill.

I think the woods would regrow before I could clean up all 12 acres with my TC40.

dave1949--A guy with a 450 dozer can do a lot of work in a short time and really smooth things out and get the water flowing in the right direction. We did many acres like that and actually turned them into pastures. We cut the stumps extra-flush to the ground and he skimmed them with dirt.

Some timothy seed, some cows to keep the brush down and the easy and cheap way out.

Wife and I are heading to Florida this morning for a few days, back on Thursday afternoon. One of those electronic conferences
but it does give us a few days away.
