I have a 1997 Class C Ford motorhome with a V10....Last time we took it to the mountains it started surging under load (kinda like a miss but feels like surging) and it threw the CE light...Cleaned the MAF and replaced the fuel filter--MAF was trashed....Took it out this weekend and it's still doing the same thing under load but doesn't seem quite as bad (no CE light this time).

Any of you Ford guys experienced this?...Any help would be much appreciated.

Wouldn't that throw a misfire code?

Yes supposedly, it should tell which cylinder has a problem, when stating " kinda like a miss but feels like surging" is exactly the way mine felt when i took it in to the dealership, wound up being a coil pack, It could be an injector as well , but in either case it should set off the check engine light and kept a code,

Sadly there is no code, just checked for the fun of it when we got home...Hopefully a Ford dealer will look at this thing..Was hoping that maybe some other replaceable sensor was bad or something...Willing to try anything at this point, want to hold the dealer as a last option.

Check the fuel pressure. Just replaced a fuel pump on a 6.2L GM powered boat this weekend for the same issues. Replaced the fuel filter and anti siphon valve with no change so after $18 in parts we got to install a $508 fuel pump on the water in 92 deg heat in 2' seas. No fun at all. 2.5 hour job on that boat.

I recall reading that the coil packs are notorious for not throwing a code, or an incorrect one when going bad. Haven't experienced it first hand. Could be a vacuum leak too. You might want to go post on Ford Truck Enthusiasts for a much more focused response from a larger audience directly knowledgeable.

I've read somewhere that Ford MH's had a problem with water getting on the rear coil packs shorting them out.
There was also a problem with water getting into the intake and ruining the air filter. There was some kind of snorkel kit fix for that and some fabricated their own fix.

A GREAT RV resource, go to the forums- RV
There are people from through out the US and farther posting about their travels.

Thanks...It has a K&N cold air kit that doesn't seem to get wet...The coil packs are a possibility...It's going to the Ford dealer tomorrow night, somehow I think this is going to hurt...Most motorhomes end up with coach problems, this has been one mechanical thing after another--the Gulfstream coach has been flawless...It will be finding a new home after this season most likely if this doesn't stop....If I can't get the chassis that I want, we'll be buying a TT.

The coil packs are simple to replace, 5 minute job, its knowing which one needs replaced, the first one I shade replaced by the dealership because was under warranty, I replaced the next one myself about 2 years ago,

Unplug the MAF and drive it, replace it if it stops surging

I've seen many Fords and GMs with similar symptoms

Therein lies the problem...I have no idea which ones(s) are bad...I can't get stuck 90 miles from home, so I'm going to let them run it on the scanner to figure it out...Might have them replace the plugs also to eliminate the potential blowout issues that these things seem to have. Then I have to deal with the rotting exhaust manifold bolts--That might have to wait for another day, or another MH...I'm getting fed up with this thing. The electrical connector legs break as soon as they are touched, had to ziptie the harness in the steering column (those broke due to the tilt-wheel) and under it due to researching multiple chassis electrical problems...Can't even look at them and they break. Never ran into that before.

Also will need ball joints next inspection (if there is one)...Not great for an E450 "Super Duty" with 50K and babied it's entire life...No grease fittings either.

There was also some issue with brake fluid leaking from the master cylinder on wiring and staring a fire with them.
Sounds more like Stupid Duty to me!

You could try to look at the coils in the dark, have someone rev it a few times. If they are breaking down you might see arcing.

It's spotless under the hood so brake fluid isn't an issue....

Might go look for arcs now..We'll see.

An option, but it's going to the dealer after work...Thanks.

90 % chance coil failure.

I know on 5.4 V8 trucks 90% of the time when a coil pack fails it cylinder #5. Its due to its proximity to the exhaust system.

Number 4. Back one on passenger side. The heater hoses used to always leak on them. After the coils were fixed the spark plug fiasco started.

Yes this was the case with my wife Explorer 5.0 although had a bit different symptom, it ran out normal at highway speed, though It would run rough at idle speed as well as increase to over 1100 rpm's at idle and then suddenly drop to almost a stall, I change the MAF and fix that problem,
