Put aside your girly-man .458 Win Mag or your wimpy .50 cal and watch guys shoot a real gun, the largest center fire rifle ever made, the .950 JDJ by SSK Industries (Ohio).

Only three were ever made. This was the lightest, the carbine version, weighing in at 50 lbs. It shoots a .95 caliber 2,400 grain bullet at 2,100 fps using 240 grains of powder, which generates 25,400 f/lbs of muzzle energy and 277 f/lbs of recoil energy.

Each round costs $40!!!

Question.. do you need a class III license to own that loudenboomer? I was thinking anything over .50 cal was classed as a destructive device requiring. a tax stamp and all the paperwork. Does anyone know?. Not that I am considered one, I really don't need a dislocated shoulder.:)

Wow! 2400 grain bullet; that's big...if I recall correctly, a 12 ga slug is about 480 grains. That thing ought to have wheels on it.

there was a 2 gauge black powder rifle made at one time Old 2 gauge shotgun: Lets go duck hunting!!!) - YouTube this is the one I was looking for 2 bore - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Interesting article. I copied this excerpt:

The historical two bore fired spherical balls or slugs of hardened lead or, in the modern metallic cartridge, additionally a solid bronze projectile. The gauge is 1.32 inches (34 mm), and the projectiles generally weigh 8 ounces (225 grams; 3500 grains). The velocity is relatively low, at around 1,500 feet per second (460 m/s) at the muzzle, but hits with approximately 17,500 ft·lbf (23,700 J) of energy

There seems to be a bit of confusion between gauge and caliber; a 2 gauge means that the bore will accommodate a lead ball made from a 1/2 pound of lead, or in other words an 8 oz. ball. Accordingly, a 12 gauge will accommodate a lead ball made from 1/12 pound of lead. In the instant case, if the bore is 1.32 inches, that would translate to a 132 caliber. Quite a beast, any way you describe it.
