Dude ? vs. Daddy O...?

My brother, now 70 - insisted that my kids call him "Uncle Dude" or Dude. This started with my daughter when she was born in '88. To this day both my kids call him dude and he is proud of that.

I wouldn't call any adult, other than close friends or enemies a name - any name other than sir, ma'am, Mr or Mrs. But, that was the way I brought up.

Now kids or teens, which I relate to very well, will get a pet name or slang response from me, but that's one way that I use to build a relationship with them.

Sounds like you are not deserving of a CCW. It's intended for stable citizens that aren't angry or looking for an excuse.

You have no idea of how deserving I am or who I am raspy boy, but I am the guy you want on your side in a firefight. And coincidently my name is Sherlock. How did you know? And as far as stable goes, well you've got me there. But the sheriff knows me and he thinks I'm ok still, even with all the pain meds

What bothers me more than terms like dude is the lack of manners many young people have. I was brought to say yes sir, no sir, mr. etc. My wife has an out of state niece who says yea and no to adults. My 12 year old knows to speak to adults with respect. It may be a southern thing but good manners were a requirement in my Dad's house and they are a requirement in my house.

I dont care for the common use of "Dude". The other one, is "frickin/freakin" in place of the f-bomb. I'm not much for cursing, and do not care for most alternatives. We had that discussion just a while back in our Scout Troop...

Down under the have 10 or more ways of using the bastar@d word for friends and and the like. I don't think that "dude" has mad it up here to the PNW yet.

As I was reading this (at work), our Safety Manager just walked by my office and said (to me) "What up, Money?" and I replied "'sup, Gee!". I don't know how many times during the course of a regular day that I regard coworkers with different euphimistic slang, and I have no idea how many of them refer to me in the same manner, I just know it's alot.

Being called dude doesn't offend me in the least, nor would Daddy-O (which is what my daughter calls me). I don't think too many people mean any harm with their slang (I know that I don't).

Incidentally, I still use "Ma'am" and "Sir" when referring to my elders and betters.

Thank GOD (pardon the blasphemy) we don't have that too much here in the UK, I would punch the person in the face.
