I don't remember the specific model number for the Kioti Backhoe that fits on the ck20... but how strong is that backhoe?

I have a bunch of large stumps that I need to take out, and a lifetime's worth of other projects that I could use it for. IS it strong enough to remove large stumps?

I've got about 40 medium to large size stumps, and I called around for some pricing... cheapest price I found was 1000 to 1500. To rent a large tractor with backhoe, I'm probably looking at 500 to 1000.

I'm sure that the professionals, and the large rentals, would probably make quick work at ripping out the stumps.

but if I bought the Kioti backhoe, Id have 1 available for other projects as well.

what do you guys think? Thanks in advance...

The Back hoe for the CK20 HST is CK2465. It has 6.5" depth. It is pretty strong, it will move that tractor all around- which is the problem with a big stump. You will spend half a day getting a big stump out. IF you have a lot of big stumps you are best off getting someone in with a big machine and have them out in a day. Now if you have unlimited time, and $6,500 to spend on a back hoe, you will have a good time getting them out yourself.

I agree with all that Gil mentioned. To spend $6500 to get out 40 stumps is much more expensive than renting a bigger machine and being done in a weekend or hiring someone for what you mentioned. If you will have a good number of other projects over the years, then it might be worth it. The bh will have a tough time cutting roots over 2 inches unless they are rotten. I've had to dig a circle around a stump several feet out to find the root size the bh would handle and even then an old axe comes in handy. I have the 7.5 footer on my CK30hst and the bh will move it around. I use mine for 3-4 various jobs a year but know it's limits. I had borrowed a mini excavator to dig out my pond and it was at least 10 times stronger and much faster. If you have a lot of time and want to play with those stumps at @2/day, then the bh might be the way to go.

Here is my story, maybe it will help. I owned a larger tractor for 10 years. For ten years I wished I had bought the backhoe. Throughout those 10 years I even priced buying one. One of the reasons I didn't was because I didn't have a good place to store it. So this year I sold the tractor and considered not even owning a tractor anymore. Thought I would just hire out everything I used to do (admitedly not that much). But after a short time, discovered this wasn't going to be as easy as I thought and certainly a lot more expensive than owning. So I downsized to the CK20S. Again debating as to whether I should by the backhoe or not. Probably, drove the dealer crazy going back and forth on the issue. Ultimately, I did buy it mostly for pulling stumps. Knowing full well it was small and would take awhile to dig them out. Well, I only have 8 hours on the tractor and have pulled 5 stumps so far. They were not tiny stumps. The biggest was maybe 15 inches. The worst was a double ash tree that was still alive. (Growing new shoots from the stump) That was the hardest as the roots were pretty intertwined and still quite alive so to speak. So yes it is probably faster, wiser to rent or hire it done, it does take away the option of working on these types of projects on your own time a schedule. That my 2 cents. I have not regretted my decision at all yet, and I can drive it in my small barn without any trouble.

Buy the backhoe. Your wife will love it.

Here are just a couple of the hundreds of stumps my CK20 with the KB2465 backhoe have removed. No question that a CK20 with a loader and backhoe is going to get moved around when it comes to uprooting big stumps of hardwood but I never tackled a stump I could not only dig out but could manage to tip and push it out of the hole. There are of course several helpful techniques to aid in this process. If you plan on making youir ck20 into a stump buster you can increase your efficiency with a couple big feet to increase the size of the stabilizer pads. Also you will achieve less tractor movement if you decrease the length or distance from tractor to stump. The tractor does not move quite as much when the boom and dipper is more verticle as opposed to stretched out flat and long during stump removal.

Another tip most of us already know if you are closer to the trunk and can't seem to be able to bust through a particularly large root one should move outboard with the bucket and attack the root where it's diameter is quite often much less capable of resisting. No question that a larger tractor can be more effective and have fewer hours in the seat for removal but the ck20 will surprise many folks with it's capability. Drive the teeth on bucket strait down as deep as you can get before curling the bucket. repeat if necessary taking one root at a time if necessary. If the hydraulic valve flatlines let up immediately Repeat if necessary BUT DON'T HOLD STICK BACK IF YOU hAVE HIT THE WALL BY STALLING THE HYDRAULICS. I have come to love the sound of snapping big roots as the powerful kb2465 takes the foolishiness out of a well anchored stump.

So far as rent or own is concerned, the ball is in your court on that one.

I don't know what you mean by big but if they are under 20" or so I would rent the biggest Bobcat Excavator you can find, for $250-300 you can have all the fun you want and not beat up your machine on 40 stumps. Then buy your backhoe!! I have pulled some large stumps with a mini ex. CJ

Agree completely. I used a CK20 with KB2365 to dig out quite a few stumps. It will do the job but expect to spend some time. Two main issues: 1) big stumps have big roots which are not easy for the BH bucket to cut so you will either have to do that manually or dig away from the stump until the bucket can cut the root. 2) if the stumps are really "big", you may have trouble pulling them out of the hole.

A big excavator will do twenty stumps between coffee breaks and cause less disruption of soil. No question that the CK20 TLB can do the job though but you are talking weeks of work to match a half day with an excavator.

Thanks for the replies fellas. Currently shopping around for the best rental price on the biggest machine for rent.

So, is a mini Excavator dramatically stronger than the Kioti BH?

A mini excavator is stronger than a 6,7,8 or 9 foot BH on a CUT but maybe by a factor of two or so. The big excavators are maybe ten times stronger and that is the ideal tool for rapid stump removal.
