give the U.S. an ego boost: the average American holds more liquid assets—cash in hand .....is that until the paycheck is cashed and used in the household budget!

Interesting article. Of course Canadian household consumer debt is also sky rocketing. Too many folks taking their "equity" they have in their homes and borrowing against it for fun stuff.

No Americans have ever had any problems with that......:D

Just a thought- I don't think Canada has an immigration problem like we do-think the shear number of minimal wage people is impacting our number?

They also don't have an obama problem either!!

Just remember ....it is still too cold in Canada for me....:)
It ain't that cold up here. Only -35 Celsius in the winter and +30 Celsius in the summer. For you Americans -31f in the winter and 86f in the summer.

Rustyiron's signature is how to fix all your problems. We need more people to WORK for a living and less people to VOTE for a living!

They also don't have an obama problem either!!

They also have a national health care system, a high percentage of union jobs, and they don't have a Mitt problem!!

We have a strong conservative/republican federal government, he also came in with a surplus, does that sound familiar, and now is the record deficit spender in Canadian history. They keep promising to balance the budget just as soon as they can transfer a few more taxes to the wage earner.

Gee, what might the Mitt problem be? He was never a "community organizer"? Or a Chicago politician? But he did know the pain of telling people they no longer have a job because no one is buying buggy whips, but more importantly, he probably has created more jobs than he was responsible for losing.

I have a multi million dollar "solar energy" facility about 10 miles from my house-that I helped pay for. It employed about 800 people for about a year. The weeds are taking over. Think a rational business decision would have been made so quickly without a handout to get it going? I don't think so.

If our trade deficits with Red China continue as they have been, it is quite evident that the net worth of the Red Chinese will surpass that of Americans. Just a thought?

Canada has been a haven for refugees for 50 years. It started out as truly persecuted people who were fleeing oppression. Lately it is anyone and everyone. US military deserters refusing overseas duty. Criminal gangs who arrive without the passports they boarded the plane with and demand their checks. The problem is we give them the checks and a home and it takes years to determine the final outcome of their status. Criminals fleeing PROSECUTION claiming persecution. The main difference is that Canada's entire population is around 30-35 Million. Less than 10% of the US's population so not a fair comparison.

Has the draft returned while I slept? :)

No worries guys, once the Sheriff of Nottingham and his cronies in Ottawa read that article, they will get to work cranking up some new taxes to address the surplus us peasants have managed to squirrel away.

While some Canadians, and most of our politicians, are busy patting themselves on the back, the real economy is not so rosy in many sectors.

Top level, Macleans and many other responsible media have been warning about a real estate bubble here for some time.

The Canadian housing market: Icarus complex? - Business - Macleans.ca

Within the last 6 months or so, Macleans also had a long article that did a detailed job of showing the parallels between the US real estate/debt market a few years back, and Canada's today.

We do have a solid (albeit arrogant and irritating to deal with) banking system here, BUT I personally don't believe that gives us the financial immunity that some believe it does. Overall Consumer and Home Equity debt levels are way too high here - great fun, until the party winds down.

As Spock would have signed off.... "Live long, and prosper".

No Pixguy the draft has not returned. There are however several US military deserters who VOLUNTEERED for service accepted the terms, collected the pay and then when ordered to Iraq or Afghanistan fled the "illegal occupation of a foreign country" and hid out in Canada. I'm not really sure how that was even a possibility as Canada sent troops to Afghanistan.

We declined Iraq as the 'Stan' was about all we could afford man power wise. Across all of Canada we only have one Division, there are only four major bases in the country that regularly sends soldiers overseas. Edmonton, AB. Petawawa, ON. Valcartier, QC. and Gagetown, NB. Everyone flies out of Trenton, ON the only heavy lift airbase in the country. There are only two fighter bases. Valcartier, QC. and Cold Lake, AB. At each end of the country, but that is all we need as we only have about 30 or so F-18s until we replace them with 20 or so F-35s in the next ten years

I don't think there are more than a dozen deserters hiding out here but even one is unacceptable. We should not be protecting someone from lawful prosecution for an offense that is also illegal in Canada. Especially when Canada is sending its own troops. If you are not willing to stand behind our troops, please feel free to stand in front of them!

ZZBYV6 the health care provider like most insurance providers wanted to pay the least they could. If your neighbors father was back in Ontario then his heath care cost are paid for by the government, but only if he is in Ontario. We need private insurance to cover us when out of Canada. Most of then want to repatriate as soon as possible to let the government pay. It is cheaper to charter a flight then to pay for several days admittance to a Cardiac Care Unit costing $5000-10000 a day. I'm not sure where in Michigan you live but from almost anywhere it is a 1-3 hour flight to Toronto depending on aircraft. That would cost less than one day on a MI hospital. That is why they wanted to fly him home.

Our health care system is not the greatest, there are potential for long wait times and large travel distances for specialties. Though for a resident in Canada it is mostly free, the federal and provincial governments also spend less per capita than the US counterparts do on health care and you have to have private insurance. I can however get a CT scan in a couple hours in most states that could take days here. The same with an MRI that takes weeks for a non critical scan (funny though a NHL player gets hurt and they get an MRI that day...).

I do love my Michigan made JD tractor however.

Like most things in life -- timing is everything. We appear to be doing better but in order to get there we went through a period of government cutbacks and higher taxes. Then we kept the taxes in place and elected governments to spend even more money we don't have. In the U.S., seems to me that you have just elected to have governments that just keep spending and have a financial system that has more crooks in it than your prison system:shocked:. It isn't immigration differences -- they are equally flawed and if anything ours is more expensive. At some point as Margaret Thatcher said "we will run out of even other peoples money" in both countries -- JMHO

My neighbor's father was visiting from Toronto. Had a mild heart attack. His 'health care' provider would only pay for treatment if he flew back to the Province. We took him to UofM. What kind of health care is that?

The Canadian health care system is set up and structured to look after Canadians while they are in Canada, with some exceptions. For those who travel outside Canada they need to purchase supplementary insurance. The neighbors father probably did not purchase such insurance.

I can also tell you from experience in the system that we had to write off many bills for US residents who availed themselves of the CDN system while here - returned home and neither the insurance company nor the Gov paid the bill.
