Website for wife's biz?

I use Microsoft Front Page 2000 for my web site and I change it all the time..I created my web site with it and can edit it at will. I use Networksolutions.com to host the site and they are very reasonable...I have Windows 7 and Front Page 2000 works with it even though some said it would not...but it does , so look around and see if you can find a copy of Front page 2000 from Microsoft on ebay or somewhere..

We use fatcow.com to host the site for my wife's business. They have templates so you can cut & paste a basic site (which is what we used). Hostgator.com was another one we looked at. Pricing was about the same for both. Both offer domain name registration & email hosting.

Squarespace.com gets lots of good words from several sources. Reasonable cost and transparent scalability (if you start to get lots of business/hits their servers automatically up to handle it instead of crashing as some do) if your business takes off.

You can also use WordPress or Blogspot for simple web sites. Lot's of free templates on Google to help set them up.

$187 was a package of the website & listing in their online yellow pages. Per month.

I looked at it, and decided I should be able to do better.
$187 a month????? :confused2:

I admin one on Hostek.com, I just paid the yearly fee which is $80 (cheaper than monthly cost). The domain name is a separate cost but cheap. You get e-mail addresses, a huge amount of space and a few software packages you can add included. There's a selling one, a blog one and some other stuff that I cannot recall.

Unless you REALLY want to do it yourself try going to a local community college and asking in the computer department if any students design websites and want to make a few bucks.

There are LOTS of students who can make a bad website. But if you have to ask the questions you posed they ALL can do better than you can. You probably can choose between a few students and can probably find someone willing to do it for about minimum wage. It's a lot easier hiring someone than learning a new language and you stimulate the economy locally.

If you get some local "kid" you can just call them up and make changes etc.

The Army Lab I retired from :) routinely hired high school and college students to make and maintain websites. To many of these fine young people website work was like play. I used to do it in the '90's. Now I'd rather ride my tractor, play with my backhoe, run my Stihl 660, leave the programming to my offspring.
