when / where / how are doubles legal?

I don't see doubles in my state often. Have seen the odd usmail contractor or fedex contractor with semi tractor and 2 shorty box trailers.. but that's about it. have seen tow trucks towing a truck that had a trailer.

the other day I say a truck pulling an RV, with a boat behind it. looked like a train coming thru town headed for the interstate.

I have often thought about welding a receiver hitch to my bumper pull camper so I could pull the boat. Doesn't seem like a great idea though.

I think in Kansas it is legal if you are under something like 70 feet total.

The few times I have wanted both toys we have just taken 2 vehicles.

If your talking travel trailers and boat trailers etc. in Ontario Canada you can pull a trailer (boat, ATV etc) behind your house trailer if it is a fifth wheel, not bumper pulll and under 65 feet in length. Don't know about out of province travellers but if you have an Ontario Drivers license, you need a "restricted A license" which is a downgraded tractor trailer license.:thumbsup:

In many states its legal. I see 10 or more every weekend at the marina/camp ground. Not a big deal to us because we do it all the time.

I have a list if every state and the towing laws but basically its under 70'. I know its not legal in Florida and Illinois but have done it in both. I have never seen a state required the first trailer to be a GN or 5th wheel as mentioned in Canada.

No doubles allowed here in NH, then again its very hilly with narrow roads.
Here's a nice table of each state. Keep in mind it looks like when they say "doubles" they mean truck and trailer and "Triples" referring to a truck and two trailers.

Dmace, Don't mean to be rude but i beg to differ with you a bit. I am a trucker by trade and haul a T T down the highway every day and the quote, " "doubles" they mean truck and trailer. "Triples" refers to a truck and two trailers. is incorrect. Hauling doubles means hauling 2 trailors with a 'dolly' connecting them. wheather 32', 48' or 53' in length. Tripples means just that tractor, 3 trailors with dollys joining each. They are not legal in NYS. and who would want to haul 3 anyway? I have a doubles endorsement and thats bad enough. The pay rate isn't justified.

that's what i've heard hear too.. 'doubles' means tractor + trailer+trailer, and tripples adds a trailer.. etc.

I've never seen a double on a common road in MN, only on the interstates and major state highways.

Boats are allowed behind a 5th wheel camper trailer.

For farm use a lot is allowed within 150 miles of the farm rules are different; but I can't pull 2 loaded wagons behind a pickup, 2 empties is allowed.
