Looking for a hauler to move JD 650 (about 1900 lbs w/loader) from Norton Mass to Chatham NY (130 miles). Any suggestions? UShip. com truckers asking a fortune for a simple move.

Unless I had a heavy trailer or a friend with a heavy trailer just drive it down the road, unless there is an interstate where it is unlawful. 130 miles / 13 mph = 10 hours. Fuel would only be a few gallons and an orange slow moving sign is $7.00. It might be monotonous but you can enjoy the scenery and the fresh air. I'm sure farmers drive down the road all the time in that area, maybe only a few miles here or there, but this is just longer. But that's just me :)

I just mapped Norton, Ma to Chatham NY, not sure where in either town but my mapping software shows 150 miles and that is down the Mass Pike (toll road)

So this may explain the increase in cost.

I would want $400

I"m glad all you guys are having fun. Driving the tractor along the Mass Pike would be an option if I could get a film crew and sell the documentary. Otherwise, not so good. Renting a UHaul is actually a good idea, but I haven't yet found a UHaul or Budget truck rental agency around here that rents flatbed trailers. But I'm still looking.

What I still can't understand is what happened to all those "multiload" truckers I've read about who put two or three pieces of equipment on a trailer and make a good day's pay charging each of three clients $250.

Regarding buying a utility trailer for $600, I think itt's a great idea, but I didn't think a $600 trailer would do the job. Am I wrong?

Final possibility -- seller may be able to put it on a truck owned by his company and get it to Albany. Anybody interested in getting it from a warehouse in downtown Albany to Chatham late at night? That's about 25 to 30 miles down Route 9.

Ain't buying toys grand?

Ya really want to rent it on the other end and just drop it on your end. If you call them, I think, they'll make the connections.

You might even be able to use a closed trailer.

John,

I'm not familiar with the Mass. Pike, but I would pay $5.00 to watch someone drive a tractor that far!:laughing:

UHaul rents 'car haulers'. They are not flatbed trailers per se, instead of a floor they have two channels that the car's tires ride in. If you tell the UHaul people you want to haul a tractor on it, they may not rent it to you.

The trouble is, the multi load guys have to find other stuff near where you want your tractor picked up, that has to be delivered near to you. That's easier said than done. I would want around $400.00 for it. By the time you factor in fuel cost, plus at least 6 hours of time (2 1/2 hours one way, 1/2 hour to load and chain down, another 1/2 hour to unload and clean up), I'd be surprised if any commercial hauler would do it for less. What you might do is look for a used, 16' utility trailer. Most of them have a 7,000 lb GVWR, and I see them on Craigslist here for $700.00 or so. You said the tractor weighs 1,900 lbs. You could buy a trailer with a single 3,500 lb axle and probably be just fine to haul it yourself. My 6x12' trailer weighs 1,000 lbs, leaving 2,500 lbs for cargo.

The parts of the Mass Pike I drove on a few years back reminded me of I-75 or I-85 going through Atlanta.
Or I-75 through Chattanooga, but with more lanes and more traffic.
