I finally got my trailer rebuilt and back in service. Stripped it down, blasted, primed and painted the frame; rebuilt the axles with new hardware and spring bushings and installed #1 2x8 decking. Truck is a 2003 F150 with 5.4L and Roadmaster active suspension.

Here's my rig hooked up to my 2008 20' Logan Coach horse trailer. A 2001 GMC 2500 3/4 ton Short Bed with 8.1 Liter Big Block V8 with Allison Transmission. Bought it in June of 2007 used. It Drinks the Gas but boy can it pull. It also pulls my 2007 20' Titan Gooseneck flatbed. Loaded with my John Deere Tractor & Gator or loaded with horses it pulls em' very well. Pulls almost as good as a Diesel. GM discontinued the 8.1 Liter V8 in 2007.

I just replaced both Catalytic Converters on it with Magnaflows and a fresh oil change , new air filter, radiator flush with new coolant , serviced transmission , new fuel filter and replaced the shift lever. Will be putting new plugs & plug wires on soon. At 142,000 miles it still runs great. Best truck I have ever had so far. If I replace this truck, I will probably get another one with the same engine and tranny. I love GMC Trucks.

Nice setup.

They discontinued the 8.1L 5 years ago. Now your only option is the 6.0L GM, the diesel, or another brand. You can only get the Ally in a GM no with the Diesel. Smart marketing. I am sure it pulls good but its not a diesel and does not pull like anything diesel made in the last 15 years, no gas does from GM, Ford, or Dodge. Just the way it is.

Not knocking the 8.1L or other big gas engines like the Dodge 8.0L V-10 or the Ford V-10. They are a great option for many. My uncle has had 2 of the Ford V-10's, one customer has 8 of the V-10's and another 2 customers each have one of the Ford V-10's. Never actually knew anyone with a 8.1L GM or 8.0L Dodge but they are all great for the guy who just pushes snow, tows occasionally, or needs a little more power than the base V8.

I don't tow occasionally with my Jimmy , I tow with it all the time. I take horses to my to my buddies house 4 to 5 at a time on 270mile runs over two mountain passes and this truck does it without problems. My buddy has a 2007 Chevy Silverado with the Duramax Diesel and he rode in my rig while pulling horses and said it practically pulls as good as his.

The only thing it doesn't do as well is pull uphill . I think other than that mine does just about as good. It still handles hills very well but just not as good as the Duramax. I can hardly tell I have a loaded trailer behind me when on the open highways. Really impressive, especially for a short bed. I think the Allison Transmission adds quite a bit to the pulling power my truck has.

I have no complaints with it and I will probably buy another one just like it when I do buy a pulling rig again. Has all the power and durability I need for what I do. I will take a good gasser truck over a diesel any day because plain and simple they are less costly to operate. I don't like the idea of spending over $100.00 for an oil change or $1000,00 per cylinder if injectors screw up and on and on and on. And injectors seem to be a BIG problem with the diesel pickups. It's the main reason I stay with a BIG gas engine. :D

Here's a current pic after dumping some stumps. I never remember to get before pics. The trailer is an 04 PJ and has been a fantastic unit. It's about time to replace the tires, not because of the tread but the dry rot on the sidewalls. I'm kicking around replacing the rims also.
