How far can LEO go?

And let me say this...

So far in my life, the only time I have been "hassled" by the police, I deserved it with the exception of being stopped in sobriety check points. I did nothing to cause the police to detain me and check my papers. Again, I say "Papers, please."

You would be the first to 'bi&ch' if your stuff was stolen and the cops let the thieves drive off with it after a traffic stop and didn't run the stuff for stolen.

You don't seem to know.......

You guys ares so pre PATRIOT ACT in your thinking that you still have rights, better check it out, BO just gave it 4 more years of life.

There was a storey today in the paper of some senators concerns. One of them said if Americans knew how the Government is interpreting the Patriot act they would be "stunned"...

I thought of this discussion when I read it.

I used to get pulled over regularly... maybe 5 or 6 times a year when I was taking night classes... never a ticket or citation.

The reasons I heard range from your type vehicle was used in a crime, driving through an industrial zone after hours..., suspicion of drunk driving, driving in the wrong neighborhood after giving another student a ride home, etc... the best one was no brake lights and I clearly demonstrated that I had working brake lights... just didn't need to use the brakes much with the 4 spd I was driving...

Each time, the officer asked to search me and my car and each time I said OK... nothing to hide.

My briefcase for school work was always at the top of the list... they insisted they needed to look inside... no problem, just engineering text books and papers I was working on.

I think, sometimes, it just a person that stands out...

As mentioned... I've never had a ticket or violation in my life...

Technically, in order to have a DWI check point there has to be signs informing drivers of the checkpoint and there has to be a way (side road, exit ramp, etc...) to avoid the check point after the sign. AND we can't sit and stop the cars that turn to avoid the checkpoint. .

What! What! What!:D

Around here they have them at the bottom of hills or around a blind corner, just so you have no way out! And they usually have a guy at the top of the hill watching for turn-arounds. If you turn in a driveway before the checkpoint they WILL chase you down.... Its like admitting your up to something!:D

They also have them at "T"'s or 4 way intersections to get the most possible people. And prevent them from just going up the intersecting road when they see the roadblock.

I only wish they gave us advance notice... wouldnt be so lucky:)

I think that is something fairly unique to CT, probably to protect those likely to know the rules. In NC, it is just like you describe...well hidden..looking for turnarounds, etc.

I wasn't going to post here, but, the more I read the funnier it gets.

Some of you, are not trying to suggest, that we have rights, are you?

Here, is the way it works, pay your taxes, keep your mouth shut, and do what you

are told and you will be just fine.

They should probably check everything you have every time they see you just because of that 'attitude' , sir. :)

What attitude would that be?

I never said anything bad or disparaging about police officers. I freely admitted that every time I have been stopped by the police I deserved it, with the exception of sobriety check points. All I said was I disagreed with the policy of checking the serial numbers of equipment or vehicles on a trailer when pulled over for something like a seat belt violation. How is that "attitude"?

earlier today I was thinking how much easier it would be for the LEO to catch the theft, and it is a rather simple plan,
I don't know why they couldn't have thought of this.....

On an interstate have a mobile sign that can be setup ahead of random exit ramps, Have the sign read ( Load check 1 mile ahead ) then simply set off the exit ramp and start raking in the criminals........;) it would be obvious that the ones having nothing to hide would stay on the interstate and those who had stolen stuff would exit.....
and to think I only graduated high school :D

You didn't think of it first, it was done at least 15 years ago in SC just like you said.
I got off my exit one day at the "trap" point after the signs on the freeway stating drug and alcohol check point ahead...the trooper asked for my driver's license and where I was headed. I told him I was headed home, he didn't recognize my address as nearby until I reminded him Trooper xxxx lived up the street from me;)
I did think it was kind of odd he kept making small talk until I later realized by getting me to talk he was sniffing for alcohol on my breath.
BTW after seeing those setups for a couple of years they stopped. I heard they were ruled improper or illegal by some court.
Personally I thought they were a pretty neat idea.

As for the comment about DUI checkpoints having to have a "way out". Not around here, they are set up where you CANNOT get by them, if you turn around you can bet they will chase you down. I also think they are a good idea.

I live in CT, they had one right on the Berlin Turnpike, in front of the DOT building, definitely no way to avoid it. As I was coming down the road I thought it must of been a horrific accident, bright lights and cop cars all over the place, they had tactical vans and special buses.

Took me about 20 minutes to get up to where they were, I was very somber as I thought it was a multi fatality for so much attention, there were 10 cops in the road going up to every car on this side of the 4 lane commercial strip. When the woman officer asks me if I've been drinking tonight?
This is like 8pm when all the families are out shopping. I almost blew up, I'm driving a minivan with my 12 year old in the car. NO! I said loud enough that the other cops in the road turned around, they waved me thru.

I heard something about needing a passport for interstate train ticket purchase??? Maybe not passport but much stricter ID requirement.

My wife is from Poland and she said it was common for school aged children to be ordered to produce their "Papers" when away from home.

MossRoad,
I understood what your saying, this isn't about if My stuff was stolen your stuff stolen or whoever stuff was stolen... its about the procedures being used to gain or obtain the opportunity to run serial no# on our privet properties, So it is being hauled on public roadways, but that still doesn't mean its a free for all who wants to jump up and take a look-see,

If I were to sit on the side of the road with my trailer and a sign out offering for anyone to hop aboard have a seat on my tractor.....for the same amount of time it would take for a LEO to pull me over go through my credentials run the serial numbers on what ever they choose, ..... I bet it wouldn't take long for LEO to come run me off because I'm causing a potential hazard on the right-of-way...... strange how things work isn't it:D
