I know this is not Chinese tractor specific but you guys helped me with a problem I had last year with my Siromer and I wanted to share this with you as I have posted nothing since. The following was recently posted on a motorcycle forum I look in on and compares penetrating oils on identical test pieces - I think it was taken from a US magazine that claims the tests were based on "lab" type material conditions.

Anyway, I have just changed all 48 flails on my flail mower in the space of about 1 hour, a job that last time took closer to 3, using WD40. I mixed the acetone and ATF 50/50, mixed it into a mayo type liquid and painted it on to the bolts with an old paint brush, few hours to let it sink in and the bolts come off no problem :D

It really does work and is a great home brew farm fix to an old problem. Give it a go - hopefully you can get Acetone, it's sold in supermarkets here in France:thumbsup:

Penetrating oil ..... Average load

None ..................... 516 pounds

WD-40 .................. 238 pounds

PB Blaster ..............214 pounds

Liquid Wrench ...... 127 pounds

Kano Kroil ............ 106 pounds

ATF-Acetone mix... 53 pounds

The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic
transmission fluid and acetone.

Sorry just seen its already been posted :ashamed:

But at least I can confirm it does work:eek:

As discussed in a previous thread on the ATF/Acetone solvent...the biggest problem is containing it..you really need a sealed metal can or glass jar...I use a pump type oil can and fill it from a jar as the acetone evaporates from the oiler...

The mix melted my first container. I put mine in a new oil can. It ate all the seals out. It still pumps, but will leak all over when I use it. I'll put up with it, it works so good. I still have PB Blaster on hand for the easy things.

Acetone is a tough cookie to contain. I've seen metal containers that have never been opened become lighter and lighter until they were enpty.

thanks for the tip

Anyone know where can I buy acetone in the states?

What kind of shelf life would the acetone/atf have, if you can find a container to hold it?

I suspect it would last for years if you could keep the acetone from evaporating.

One way to do this would be to keep the acetone in its original container, the atf in its container, and mix a little at a time in an old tin can. Paint it on with a chip brush and you are good to go.

When the acetone in the original container reaches the 1/2 point, pour the atf into it and put a new label on.

Thanks Bob Rooks and Bedlam :). I've had acetone before but it as been years sense I bought it. I quess I'll be getting some.

i havent tried the acetone atf mix as i havent seen scientific tests confirming it to be better than Kroil or Zep45 but it sure seems to have anecdotal evidence that it works:thumbsup:

If your looking for a container, i hear that the WD40 (brand) pump sprayers have good seals and can withstand the effects of the acetone.

Ill likely try mixing some up and give it a try when i near a parts store to get some acetone and wd40 sprayer

These are the absolute best sprayers for acetone, lacquer thinner, MEK, and other volatile aromatic hydrocarbon solvents (I speak from experience). I believe you can also get them at NAPA and other parts houses.

I've used Kroil quite a bit and I really like it. I've also used their engine degunker which also works well.

Why go to the bother trying to emulate an off the shelf product - mix when you need it and use the "old paint brush method". But then I'm a cheap skate SOB:laughing:

I am going to try to bring this old thread back to life.

Last week I broke a connection on an old water line. 3/4" galvanized pipe which had been assembled and buried under oak tree in a damp and acidic location. The original install was done in the late 1920s. The outside was rust city, and my previous experience with this same line in other locations was that the fittings were very stuck.

To make matters worse, it had been cast into an old concrete retaining wall, and repair options were limited.

I remembered this old thread, and decided that I would give the acetone and ATF mixture a try. Mixed it up in a tuna can, and applied with a cheap 1/2" paint brush, on the only fitting between the break and the water meter.

An hour later, the fitting was off the pipe. Amazing stuff.

The only dicey moment came when it looked like the ATF and the acetone were not going to mix well. I kept stirring for a few minutes and eventually they dissolved in each other.

Not only did I get it apart, but the pipe threads did not "grab" each other, and looked perfectly preserved after the fitting came off, so I was able to screw a brand new one on and get a good seal.
