The last thing for a horse

Tallyho.....understand your dilemma.

My grandfather had a saying, "I'd rather wear out than rust out!" In his mid 80's he was taking me on walking hunts for javalena. And, horseback into the hills, for half a day, hunting. He was active until he fell ill one day, went to the hospital for a couple of days, was going to be released next day but passed in hospital of heart attack that night.

My uncle, his son, got up one morning and rounded up a bunch of sheep horseback with his 30 something son and put them in a trailer. Son took off for auction and my uncle took both horses, rode mile plus back to barn, unsaddled and turned horses loose, went back to house for lunch. Son found him about 3pm.

That's the way I want to go.... to be out doing what I love to do and then check out.

We don't seem to get to choose, had cousin who lost fight with cancer after almost 2 years.

So, if you and your horse feel like pole bending, go for it, I'd say. Me, hope I'm punching cows or fixing/making something when my time comes.

I know overseas in slaughter they use this blank round propelled piston. The whole think looks like mushroom upside down with the big flange to sit on the forehead. Round is inside and on the smack of the top with a hammer, the charge will push the piston inside the head to provide humanitarian kill.

I think this is what someone else mentioned being shown in "All Creatures Great and Small" - a captive bolt gun.

I guess, in part, it is due to gun control in UK (and much of europe) - having said that there was recently a case of an abattoir working killing his girlfriend with a captive bolt gun.

That's what I'm afraid of. After only about 20 years of training, I finally have 2 of my horses very good at pole bending which I love to do. But at their age (and mine too) I am afraid that any run may be their last. (and maybe mine too)

Though my wife wants me to retire from competition, I know retirement is a permanent thing and I am reluctant to call it quits and head for the easy chair. My delimma, live live to the fullest? Or die trying? Or just head for the easy chair and relive your memories?
If you can't race, teach. Lots of satisfaction showing young folks how to do things.

Don't ever give up your passion. I rode bulls all through high school and was headed to college on a full ride rodeo scholarship. I passed it up because the lady that I was in love with didn't want that lifestyle. I was torn but chose the life I thought would last forever. Well forever was about 10 years and I no longer fit what she wanted and left me and my three kids. That was 2 years ago and I have met somebody that loves me and supports me even if she doesn't understand why. I have started riding in the novice pens again and it feels soooooooo good, I am having the time of my life and really have the best of both worlds!

I've left this thread just because it's a little painful for me. I re-visited it tonight just because I see it almost every day.

It's good to see the advice on what round to use for the future (I know it's gong to be soon) end to another great horse.

I'm not a horse guy. Plain and simple...I have horses because my wife loves them. However, I do have a soft spot in my heart for animals of any kind. To me dogs are about the same. I've put a few down that may have needed sooner attention. Through my own selfishness I've kept them alive just because I feel that I need them.

All that being out there for everyone...guess I'm not sure how to ask.

Is there a chart or something that can show where to place a projectile to do what it needs to do? You guys can contemplate every round and I've got something that will fire it. I don't care about the size of the bullet, but I'd like to make sure it's completely final. I'd really not like to visit this thread again, so If you could send me a P.M. I'd appreciate it.

To stop or keep competing is the same answer for when to put an animal down. And the answer is YOU know when.

If you don't think it is time to quit then do NOT. If you do quit you will likely regret it.....
