Shrinkage?

A recent observation that seems to be growing all the time.Like we don't or wont see it.Have you noticed the things that have shrunk in size over the last few years?
My list.First is my cookies,from Wal Mart, like most cookies the cookie itself has shrunk,yet the package is still the same just with more plastic form filler.(price up),The 50 lbs dog food is now 44...lbs.(price up).A half gallon of ice cream is now shrunk.(price up).Twinkies have shrunk,Used to buy 2 batteries in a pack for a dollar now its one,
These have come to mind and I pay attention ,because I just tonight could see a difference in height of an 'identical' oil filter laid side to side
the model made just 4 months ago has shrunk 1/4 inch in height, and just slightly on the diameter. (had to use calipers to tell).
oh yea the oreaos you now have to buy double stuff to have regular stuff LOL

Are sure of this shrinkage thing or is it movement as I have noticed. The waist has definitely increased in size, the chest it seems to be smaller and the muscles that used to flex and bulge have all gone and hidden somewhere!

I work in retail and for about 15 years our suppliers have been downsizing packaging to hide increases in price. Everything from canned and dry groceries to "hard goods" is being shrunk. It's hidden inflation. If stores really wanted to be up front they'd put the price per pound, gallon, etc. on the product labels.

They are also changing measures to make it hard to compare, what used to be sold in cubic inches is now measured by volume in a different way.

Watch grocery prices for the next while my friends, we are in for a ride!

Just don't mess with the price of donuts

Our largest local super market, Hannaford, does a nice job of putting price per pound or price per count, on the shelf tags. Makes it easy to compare the actual cost of products side by side on the shelf. On the other hand, they were hacked and I had to get a new debit card.

Walmart down the road does this also, except they use price per ounce usually.

When I built my house about 26 years ago, I made a minor error installing the toilet paper holder. The sides were separate, and I installed them slightly too close to each other. The roll of TP would touch and just barely bind when unrolling. Today there is almost a half inch gap.

Normally I only use the center part of the toilet paper, but I guess that wider does give you an extra safety factor.

Bedlam and the rest of you are absolutely correct. Do the manufactures think we wouldn't notice or are to stupid?? yah the dog food that used to be 50 lbs in the brand I get is now 35, same price or higher. same with many of the other products you mentioned. you now have to go to places like Costco that supersize just to get the old standard sizes/quantity. Guess when a 6 pack of 12 ouncer's become 10 ouncer's there will be an uprising.

Yeah, shrinkage is rampant around our place especially. Seems as though all the clothes in the closet are shrinking. Even the wife notices that.. Must be the humidity in our coastal climate....Dan.

Friendlies Ice cream went from 64 to 56 now 48 oz and Yes I noticed. Poland Springs made there water bottle smaller and came out with a "story" about how the reduced size was helping the environment.

Seems I've noticed that too! Had to buy a bunch of new pants as the old ones shrunk at the waist. Legs didn't seem to be affected though?

Now I'm wondering if as the ice cream buckets shrink my pants will expand?

Ive been noticing this as well. Almost all Ice cream used to be sold in 1/2 gallons,not anymore,48 oz,but the package is shrunk to look exactly the same as the 1/2 gallon it replaced.Today I bought a 1/2 gallon of Orange Juice,or I thought,the container looked a little thinner than a 1/2 gallon,so i looked,and yup its now 59 oz.Others I notice,potatoe chips,same big bag,but more air in there,and less chips,Yogurt,used to be 7oz,now 5-6.Also lately "hard rolls" no bigger than a donut in some supermarkets.Also notice all the 20oz water bottles all gone replaced by 16.9 oz.Gatorade was 20oz,now has a contoured bottle,and 16.9 oz for the same price...Lately I'm see cold cuts with prices advertised as (per 1/2 lb)instead of per pound to appear to be cheaper.

Breyers did this to their yogurt probably 4 years or more ago. I sent them an email asking why they reduced their size but kept the prices the same and their response was that it was due to customer demand about serving sizes. What a bunch of crap. I've refused to by any breyers product since then.

One problem is that it's a chicken and egg thing. As a supplier, if your competitors downsize their package volume, and you don't, your price will be higher and you will lose sales. Makes no sense but it's true.

Here's one regarding Dial bar soap--remember when it used to to be a flat bar of soap. Well, now its sculpted out in the center--same size but missing some soap. Very cleaver! You're best friend at the stores these days is a calculator.

And also I want to mention how wal mart cut corners on their cookies. The usual square ones (choc covered grahams) now have the corners cut on a 45 degree angle. This does help them from getting crushed some but I think the intent was less material Ive also found I can add five more cookies to each box.LOL Think of the diesel thats waisted , pretty soon the trailers will weight 10,ooo lbs.
and dating back years now I could fit two boxes of envelopes into one. maybe thats where the idea came from.Only good thing there is I'm emailing and don't use many envelopes.
