I wonder sometimes if we are being a little careless with all the personal information we post on forums . There are a potential 6.5 billion people who can access this information . Burglars , extortionists , rapists , murders and then the real low life's , Telemarketers and the Tax man .

We post pictures of our children , talk of our habits , tell of our home defense weapons , where they are stored , how many we have and if we will use them . We talk about our equipment , it's value and if it's locked up or not . We talk of our work and the hours we work , which tells them when the house is empty . Our address is not hard to find as a lot of us tell our location and name , a phone book is all they need then .

It's food for thought .

Well.. as long as they are reading.. I can think of two places they likely won't be running out to rob.

1, anyone here who posts that they own a gun and won't hesitate to use it to protect themselves.

2, any southern hemisphere bar patrons that pre-emptively beat people up just to make sure that they don't cause problems later! ( that's just poking a lil fun there.. the movie was good too! )

seriously though.. yeah.. I wouldn't be postin my SS number.. lifelock or not, and no.. that wasn't meant as a dig on you. If you remember our previous conversations on the subject.. that's just a lil fun. Y'all seem like some pretty decent and tough guys down there.. i surely wouldn't go lookin for trouble down there!;)

Its easier to drive to a mall, watch for old people, follow them home, conk them on the head as they enter their home and take everything. Doing research on the web is too hard.

We own some land about 9 miles from town. There are three houses across the highway from it(well, two now. The crack house got torn down). Anyhow, about 20 years ago the older couple that lives across the street, the husband went to the grocery store in town in the early evening, just around dusk. When he came home, as he was walking from the garage to his house, two guys came up, whacked him on the head, knocked him down and ripped his pants off his body trying to rip the wallet out of his back pocket. It can happen to anyone, anywhere.

Another time, at my work, one of my co-workers left for work. She was in her 50s, purse on her arm. I was watching her from the third floor window walk down the alley towards our parking lot. She crossed the path of two guys at the alley intersection. As soon as she got around the corner, I saw those two guy turn around and run in her direction. Nothing I could do as I was on the 3rd floor and a half a block away. I ran out to the lot. By the time I got there, they were gone and she was crying. She said she walked up to her passenger door, opened it, stuck her purse in, closed the door, walked around the truck, opened the drivers door and saw the passenger door open. She looked around and her purse was gone. She never saw them. She was just lucky they took the opportunity to steal her purse. Who knows what would have happened if she had kept her purse and gotten in the SUV she was driving. Fortunately, she had her house keys and car keys in her hand.

Just goes to show you that it can happen anywhere, anytime. Criminals are mostly opportunists.

The big thing in Oklahoma with all the Indian casino's is to hang around until they spot a winner and the tail them home. That and the old "I'm with the utility company" and ripping off senior citizens:mad: have really been popular on the morning news of late.

If one takes a few simple steps to protect your home systems and network the chance of someone getting money from my checking account or stealing is all but zero. If you don't protect your network, don't run virus scanners, don't use a firewall, use easy to guess passwords, and open every email attachment anyone sends then you might be a victim of Internet crime. Not real hard to stop this stuff.

It is much faster and easier to find information on people today but it is the Information Age. This information was available before just it required you to get out of the house to get the info. A trip to the courthouse can provide quite a bit of information on many people.

Kids and the Internet is a real concern. The kids can get invovled with adults acting as other kids. And sometime not acting. But if one watches out for your kids and do simple things its easy to nullify Internet threats to the children. When we built our house most rooms have two Ethernet connections. We were always iffy if having the kids on the INet in their rooms was a good idea. Its not. We have a study so the kids have to use the systems in the study. No computers in their room. Since I'm almost always in the study I can monitor what they kids are doing on the Internet. My kids are young but they already get on Google and look up information for school. They play games based on TV shows they watch. And they watch videos on youtube.

Most thugs are not reading TBN. :D They are out doing their thing. Driving around trying to figure out how to steal something so they can go buy drugs and Commercial Company. The vast majority of thugs ain't smart and have very little education. Getting on a computer and trying to hack into my bank account just is not going to happen. Sifting through hundreds of pages of TBN to gather information on me would take quite a bit of work.

It would be easier to just watch the house. :D Course if they did that we would notice and call the POlice. Which we have done several times if we see people who are not our neighbors and are acting suspicious.

Having said that I still won't post photos of my kids in such away that anyone can identify them by name.

Being a victim of Internet crime or crime derived from my posts on the INET is way down the list of my crime worries.

What SCARES THE H.... out of me is every time my family gets in the car and drives somewhere. Its the biggest threat we deal with on a daily basis.

Later,
Dan

You nailed it, Dan. Driving is probably the most dangerous activity we do, followed closely by the dangerous occupation of convenience or liquor store clerk.

You just need think about what you share. If you paint the big picture for someone, then yes, you invite trouble.

But just remember, for every tidbit of information a person has on you, another person has more information on them. :)
