Blueriver here in NC you have always had to have proof of ins if stopped. If no proof then the vehicle would be towed to the next tow company that was on the list 's storage yard till proof of ins was obtained. I know in a lot of the country ins isn't required but if someone runs into my truck I want some way of knowing the repairs will be paid for by the at fault party. I think required proof of ins. is a good idea. Later, Nat

Bet it will make the tow companies very happy. I always replace my insurance cards and throw away the old ones. It is amazing how many people have insurance, but they have so many expired cards in the glove box it takes them forever to find the current one. Worse, they forget to put the new one in the vehicle, get a citation and then have to go to the trouble of getting the proof of current insurance to the courts.

Serves the people with no insurance right. Seems like there are more and more in my area with no insurance.

That's how it works in my county... 30-day impound... costs over $1000 with towing.

They do the same if driving without a valid license.

The no insurance problem is becoming very wide spread. A lot of states now require drivers to carry in addition to liability insurance "Uninsured or Under Insured" insurance. NC law on the Uninsured or Under Insured became effective 01/01/09. For a good article on insurance requirements go the web link below/ The requirement by state is towards to end of the article.

Off subject, apologies, but since talking about NC per motor vehicles, I found it interesting that for 2009, all motor vehicles in NC will not have an inspection sticker on the front, left bottom portion of the windshield, but on the license plate instead.

Actually makes some sense.

Per the "proof of insurance" topic, without some sort of data base exchanging information between the state and insurance companies, what's from stopping someone to "buy" car insurance, get their "proof of insurance" card from the insurance company, and then cancell their policy?

So when your plate gets stolen, the thief gets a valid inspection as well. Makes no sense to me. Inspection stickers are much more visible on the windshield. While you are at it, put a plate on the front of those NC vehicles, too.

In NY the DMV and insurance companies communicate very well. If coverage lapses, the carrier notifies the DMV. DMV then serves notice that the plates must be surrendered, or new proof of insurance provided. If not, a State Trooper appears so the owner can surrender the plates from the comfort of his own home.

Yea... Many years now... thats why I tell my wife and kids to have the vehicle towed to our property... Storage fees are like $50.00 a day for a wrecked car!

I have had stickers stole from my 2003 car... My 1989 car has about 1/4 inch of sticker build up on the plates!

I'm in Texas. I have insurance.

I think that the state needs to do something about uninsured drivers. I don't know the statistics, but people without insurance are involved in allot of accidents. If they don't have insurance, they shouldn't be driving. It's not that expensive. If they can afford a cell phone, they can afford insurance. Just get rid of the cell phone if it's that difficult.

One thing that we have here that we didn't have in California is an inspection every year. You have to take your vehicle in to be inspected so that it works properly. Lights, horn, brakes and windshield have to be in good shape. If not, you don't get a sticker in your windshield that allows you to drive on the roads. Vehicles here are in much better condition then in California. It's something that I noticed fairly soon after moving here, there are no junkers on the road.

Never had a plate stolen in my life, that said, if I had one stolen, pretty sure I'd report it right away. Then again, what do the theifs do now for inspection stickers?

If I'm driving behind a car, makes sense to me that the inspection sticker would be more visable on the license plate than the front windshield.

I will however call the NC department of motor vehicles and request that all NC cars have license plates on the front AND back. Just don't hold it against me if it dosen't get done.

Not exactly on the license plate sticker, they are coordinating the inspection stickers to match the plate expiration- see NCDENR - Division of Air Quality - Motor Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) Program - AskMe

As for the "proof of insurance card", some companies let you print them yourself from an online copy..any halfway savvy computer user could tell you how to edit and print one saying whatever you want:p

I am amazed listening to the AM radio on my way to work in the mornings...just about every day there is a "hit and run" accident causing a traffic tie up. Cause? not sure- drunk? no insurance? illegal alien?

Same way in Vermont Eddie,We also need proof of ins card for inspection.

Hmm- my 21 year old son's cell phone is about $30 a month, his liability only insurance is $300 a month in SC, for a 10 yr old Ranger pickup.

So where will the "E sticker" go?

I was given the impression from the guy at DMV that is was to be on the license plate. Currently, I have one vehicle without a state inspection "sticker".

Beats me! One of my sons had a NC licensed vehicle, was registered to his mother living in NC, while he was going to college in another state- what a mess that was:(
Expired inspection sticker with no way to get one via mail and the state he was in did not do inspections. Merely driving back to NC to get it inspected put him in a possible violation not to mention the problem of having to go back to get one, he was nearby, in SC, but what if had been going to school in say, California:confused: They can't really expect a NC licensed car to return to NC just to get inspected every year:cool:

HOLEY MOLEY!!!!!

Either it's a whole heck of allot more expensive to drive over there, or there's something that's caused his rates to be so extreme!!! I pay that for six months of full coverage now.

When I was in my teens and early twenties, I just had liability, which was $50 a month on my parents plan. But even when I got my DUI, it was only $100 a month back in the early 90's.

Guess I'm a bit out of touch on insurance rates.

What's the rest of the story for your son???

My 21 y/o son's insurance for a 2005 Mazda in Michigan with $400 deductible collision, comprehensive, and full liability and health coverage is $1600 a year.
