I have an Onan Performer 18 XSL with what I think is a failing ignition module. I've checked all the obvious stuff (safty switches, grounds, etc). It's not a fuel problem. It starts and runs well but cuts off when it warms up. As soon as it's cool it will start again. Cuts off just like I turned the switch off. Does anyone have any idea where I can get a replacement module???? I have not been able to find one. I can not read the serial number of the engine. Any help would be appreciated!! :)

There are Onan parts on Ebay. A lot of Onan Dealers are also Cummins Dealers.
Have you changed the spark plugs? I rebuilt a Onan CCK engine complete with new Champion plugs and it ran like crap. After checking everything I could think of I put the old plugs back in and it purred. I will never buy Champion plugs again!

Is it a diesel generator? The one we have is actually a Kubota diesle engine.

We had a similar issue with it, and kept getting an engine tempature code as the problem. It would start up, run for about ten minutes, then stop. After an hour, it would start up again and do the exact same thing.

The problem turned out to be the sensor that was telling the computer to turn off the engine because the water tempature was not changing. After a certain amount of time, the computer expect the water tempature to warm up. If this does not happen, it shuts down.

All the parts for this Onan generator are availabe at Kubota.

One thing that the Kubuta mechanic said is that Onan used a water anti freeze solution that cyrstalized in the engines and gave them allot of problems. This might be what happend to ours, but it might have just been a bad sensor. We just don't know for sure, and neither did Kubota.

Good luck,
Eddie

Hi Guys...

Thanks for the response. It's not the plugs. This particular engine is known to have problems with the ignition module. I'll try ebay. Thanks for the tip. It's not a diesel and it's not hooked to a genarator. It's on an old Gravely tractor. The engine has run flawlessly up until now...very frustrating. Anyway...thanks again gents! : )

Its basicly a P218, Performer series, same as in my JD318 tractor. It could be either the coil pack breaking down or the magnetic trigger sensor that is under the flywheel. There is a trigger ring that spins on the crankshaft past the sensor, bacialy a "hall effect" sensor and this triggers the coil to fire the plugs. Try your local JD dealer if you dont have a source for Onan parts localy. Mike

I suggest Onan engine users stock up on those electronic ignition parts- they are getting scarse. When Onan stopped producing small engines, production was also cut on replacement parts, so supplies are limited to what places have on hand and a little bit of aftermarket stuff from Stens. Mechanical components should be around for a while as Onan engines were built strong, but the ignitions had a limited lifespan thus a higher demand for those parts.

Mike....

I am pretty sure it is the ingnition control module, I just hisitate to pull the flywheel and do the work myself. When I was younger I pulled a few, but I no longer have my puller and do not know if it would fit anyway. I really haven't had a chance to get involved into it too deeply as I ahve been traveling for my job. I ahve no idea what a fair price is to have it done and it wiould have to be picked up and dlivered as all I ahve is a small pick up and I don't thin I cna get it in the back.,...even without the deck. Anyway...thaks for you response.

Fordlords....

I agree and I have considered purching two of them.....the're not cheep, but the dern thing runs so flawlessly (when it runs) I would hate not to be able to find the part if it fails again before I wear it out.

Thanks guys!

As of the date of this post the electronic ignition module part number 166-0785 found on the "P" series engines, P216, P218, P220 & P224 is readily available and currently in production by Onan. There is no shortage at all. The Onan opposed twin engines are no longer in production but the vast majority of parts to rebuild or service them are being manufactured on a regular basis.

The modules are an electronic device and age, heat, vibration will at some point take it's toll and they will fail. I have one that is still going strong after 21 years on a P218G.

Onan has NOT stopped supporting the huge number of these engines still in use today on Garden tractors, welders, generators and many other applications.

Oversize pistons, rings, rods, bearings, valves, gaskets, seals, oil pumps etc. are available for not only the early "B" series engines such as the BF, BG, B43, & B48 but also for the CCK series engines going back to the late 60's.

A large number of minor parts are also in production or sitting in their warehouse just waiting for someone that needs them. This is the main reason for the high cost of replacement parts from Onan.

No other major manufacturer maintains the enormous inventory of spare parts that Onan does for engines that have been out of production for ten, twenty or thirty plus years!

Because Onan stopped manufacturing the "P" series engines several years ago it is wrongly assumed that parts are hard to come by or there is a "shortage".
They ceased production of the CCK back in the mid eighties but you can still get everything you need to rebuild one just like new.

It won't be cheap to do but Onan engines are not cheap to begin with. Those of you still using your tough little garden tractors from the 70's already know what they are worth after 25-35+ years of use.

Those Onan engines were designed to be rebuilt many times unlike the "disposable" engines being made today.

Thank you for the update!

Since the coming of the Onan/Cummins/Linamar/Kubota whoever owns the thing, this parts sourcing has become very confusing for Onan gasoline engine owners. You go to mower parts shops, they shrug their shoulders. (Been there, done that.) Go to OEM's, most of them say that since they no longer use Onan engines on their equipment they can't get the parts. Unless you have the original printed engine owner's manual for an older piece of equipment, it's difficult to even look up part numbers for Onan engines.

I'm one who knows the value of Onan engines well, and price wouldn't be much of a concern when I need patrts for an older Onan engine that is worth fixing.

Cummins started to buy Onan in 1986 and completed the purchase in 1992. In 2008 they merged the two names, CumminsOnan. The parts problem I believe is due to several things. Since the Onan engines are no longer on the sales floor powering new tractors, welders etc. The dealers wrongly assume parts are no longer available. Or they are just LAZY and don't want to bother supporting the enormous number of machines still on the job.

I plan on starting a new thread here at Tractorbynet with a listing of the most common Onan part numbers and their availability. Now I just have to go and do it. :)

I would check the wiring connections first. I'm talking about the big one on top of the motor. Mine was the problem. Not the ignition parts. The spade lug connectors were loose "mechanically" causing the ignition module to loose power intermittently. Was a simple fix to just rebend the spades to make a good connection again. Did that in February on my Performer 20G in my Steiner and it's worked fine since.

Are you a dealer in Onan parts? If so, you might want to mention something at the various forums - I've seen some posts about guys looking for Onan parts in the Lawnmower/Small Engine forum over at BITOG...

If it starts and runs until it gets hot it could also be the ignition key switch.. I had a bolens G16 that would run for for about 10 minutes and then die just like that, and wouldn't start until it cooled.. Turned out the key switch was shorting the kill circuit to ground after it got a little warm..

Any ideas what would cause one to spark ONLY when the starter is NOT engaged?

Just in case you haven't found an ignition module yet all you need is to go to the Toro web site and click on parts, enter your model number and no serial number is needed. You can get the part number but you have to get the part through a dealer or aftermarket dealer like Parts Tree and others.

Actually there is one on Ebay right now. Enter wheel horse 520h in the search box. 516,518 and 520 are the same I believe.

I had that same problem with a 520H and that is what it was. After looking at a lot of websites it seems to be a common problem.

You do know you have to remove the flywheel shroud, the intake covers, the coil, the flywheel, governor link and a few other things I can't recall at the moment to replace the module?

i gave up on onan engines years ago: when a machine shop quoted me more than the cost of a new motor, to rebuild my 16hp 2cyl....they said the parts were really high..?

I rebuilt a couple CCK's about 20 years ago. The round main bearing (think regular cam bearing for auto engine) cost $50. for one!!! The gasket set cost more than one for a small block Chevy!
I don't know how Onan EVER stayed in business.

I'm not he, but if you click on his name and go to his home page you'll find he is a dealer. He probably doesn't want to anger anyone by broadcasting the fact he is a dealer in every thread, there are people who take offense at that.

I have read you can replace the coil with a gm dual plug coil module. Probably would work as both the plugs fire at the same time and it would have a higher voltage spark I bet.
