JD4020 John Deere
Best Tractor Ever Built
Model Year: 1968

This is the best tractor ever built!

Pros: Too many to list
Cons: The seals weep fluid around the steering shaft and onto the steering wheel. Not anything to get worked up over though.

JD4020 John Deere
John Deere's Best Tractor Ever
Model Year: 1967

This tractor really put John Deere far, far ahead of the pack when it was introduced. It had more features, more power, and was more refined than anything on the market. It has served us well over the last forty-six years. We raised cotton and soybeans, and this tractor was our main workhorse on the farm for more than twenty years. The number of hours (13,680) is correct; that is not a typo. It is a fantastic tractor, and I would recommend one to anyone who wants a true classic that can still get the job done.

Pros: Power, features, smoothness of operation and value.
Cons: Even the newest ones are rather old, and they will likely require some maintenance to keep them running.

Has been an excellent tractor.

Pros: All good.
Cons: Replaced front axle with a stronger one from a JD model 4430 when the original one broke.

My Tractor
Model Year: 1968

Don't know exactly what I'm suppose to put in here. I'm 46 male in Montana in my hometown. Live close to the family farm that I grew up on and helped dad farm. I own my own land also and like to collect old JD tractors.

Pros: Classic John Deere.
Cons: I dont know yet.

Great tractor for the money. Needs better battery system for cold starting. Reliable tractor. I burned up a hay wagon when sparks came out of the muffler and landed on the hay.

Pros: Plenty of power, easy steering, comfortable tractor.
Cons: Cold weather starting. No spark arrestor on stack.

JD4020 John Deere
Old Iron
Model Year: 1966

I have a 1966 4020 John Deere, with a Woods loader. The tractor is used on our ranch and does all of our ranch chores with ease. Mowing hay meadows and pastures, bailing and hauling hay, dirt work and fencing. We have a Belltech hydraulic post hole digger on the front for all of the fencing chores. The tractor is a reliable a hammer and has never failed to get the job done. This is the tractor that John Deere should still be making today. Forty-five years later and it is still just a reliable as the day it was built. We have done the usual maintenance but the diesel engine is all original and runs like a top. In our area of Texas it is considered to be one one of the best tractors ever made. That is an opinion that is backed up every time I put the key in and fire it up. I am very satisfied with our 4020. It has been an excellent tractor for our needs.

Pros: Good size, heavy weight, reliable and good parts availability.
Cons: The hydraulic system is not the best for a loader. When you push in the clutch it disconnects the rear hydraulic pump. You have to minimize clutching to keep the hydraulic pump supplied. It has not been a problem for me, but the operator needs to understand that too much clutching will starve the hydraulics.

JD4020 John Deere
Needs a lot of TLC & Patience
Model Year: 1968

This is just an old tractor that needs lots of t.l.c. & patience trying to get going to maintain about 30 acres with Tifton 85 and about 15 to 20 head of cattle in south Texas. I will appreciate any help I can get.

Pros: New radiator, water pump, hoses & belt, seems to run good.
Cons: Trying to rewire & hook up front end loader.
