Great Tractor for Small Farm
Model Year: 1992

With 4WD, back wheels inverted, and liquid in the tires, this is a "billy goat" of a tractor on extreme hills. Great fuel efficiency. Always starts. Low center of gravity. I started with 60 raw, rough acres and this tractor. Put over 1000 hours on it. The acres look a lot better, and the 1070 is looking a bit worse. I may get another tractor someday, but I'll never get rid of this one.

Pros: Efficient. Reliable. Safe. Enough power for the job.
Cons: Original OEM parts a bit expensive (JD tax).

1 Mean Green Machine!
Model Year: 1994

I bought this tractor for lack of better words. My hunting addiction, after owning it for a few years, I put a new Bush Hog 2045 loader on it and couldn't be happier. It's a two wheel drive and is sometimes used as a dozier around the farm. I've always been amazed how easy it starts in cold weather. The old gal is showing her age now and I'm having to replace a few parts here and there (left axle & sway link). This is a true work horse for its size. If you are thinking about buying one, jump on it. Also this thing uses very little fuel unless using a Bush Hog in the tall stuff. :)

Pros: Plenty of power, starts any time all the time, small enough to pull on a 16 ft. trailer.
Cons: Parts are getting hard to find.

What a Little Tractor!
Model Year: 1997

This 32hp tractor is quite a machine for little jobs! Front wheel assist is a life saver! I can get into small places to clean pens, work a calf roping lane, and pull trees. Still hefty enough to plant acres of grass, no-till wheat plots, and use 3-pt. disc and blade. Only downfall is not enough hydraulics to lift large round bales! Will haul the small ones, around 800#, but no bigger. Would like to try a 3-pt spike on the large ones, but don't have it yet.

Pros: Durable, reliable, easy to maneuver.
Cons: Need a little more horsepower.

Serves It's Purpose
Model Year: 1991

I traded down sizes from a MF 265 tractor. There was not the need for the larger tractor anymore due to downsizing. I looked for a year before settling on my JD 1070 with a FEL. I checked and changed all the fluids and filter that required serving. Very cheap to operate. One of my FEL hoses leaked and the bucket would drift down. One hoses and (2) repaired cylinders corrected that. I am well pleased with its ability to lift and move 1300 lbs. rolls of hay. Very good tractor.

Pros: Overall pretty good for a 23 year tractor.
Cons: Getting use to running the RPM's so close to the redline mark.

My 1st Tractor

Good little tractor, does everything I need. Has a front end bucket loader. I switched it to turf tires, works great.

Pros: Good little tractor.
Cons: Clutch can burn too easy, I already did it.

39 hp. Plenty of power for plowing garden plots. I love the power steering, and the quality of the tractor is excellent.

Pros: The front end loader is great, with the quick tack bucket.
Cons: Have to fully stop to change speed ranges.

1990 John Deere 1070
Model Year: 1990

This has been a very reliable and tough machine. At 39 horsepower, it has done a lot of grading, raking and bucket work. The backhoe attachment has been very useful and would be hard to do without. The bucket pins are pretty badly worn at this point, and the clutch froze up when I parked it in a field too long. However I know if I get that clutch replaced this winter, it will be back in business. Tried to free the clutch already several times with no luck. Can't get at it from the inspection cover (breather) either. What a great machine its been though for 20+ years.

Pros: Tough down to earth machine.
Cons: Pushing in that clutch pedal is getting tiring!

Versitile Little Workhorse
Model Year: 1989

By workhorse, I mean I don't have to feed my Deere all winter as I do my draft horses. We work in woods, orchards, open fields and lots of hills. Four wheel drive is great. A front loader is essential with this tractor. It is easy to transport on a trailer to go where the work is. The gear speed between 3rd and 4th is quite a jump. I would prefer a lower 4th gear ratio and even closer ratios from 2nd to 3rd. I recently added a three point backhoe with PTO driven hydraulic pump because of no rear hydraulic attachments.

Pros: Compact size make it easy to maneuver in trees.
Cons: Marginal power for haying (38 HP).

1070 John Deere 4wd
Model Year: 1996

We purchased this tractor to basically handle a 2 acre garden. I'm sure it will be used in several other capacities on the Ranch but that is the primary purpose. To date we haven't used it so I will have to add to this in the future. The tractor looks like new and has been stored inside throughout it's lifetime.

Pros: 4wd, condition.
Cons: No cab.

JD1070 John Deere
Oldie but Goodie
Model Year: 1989

At the time of this review I've had a little over a year under my belt with the 1070. I acquired this as part of the deal when we took ownership of our new property in late 2010. It was purchased new in 1989 by the previous owner and only had 286 hours on it. It's virtually new. This has been a fantastic tractor and a perfect size for our 20 acres. I've added a quick hitch and modified a box blade, JD 506 rotary cutter and weight box to accept the hitch. I've also purchased and 84" WR Long hydraulic plow for snow. The tractor has plenty of power to get through most anything. The MFWD (4wd) works great and has gotten me out of some muddy/snowy conditions. I've also purchased a set of turf tires for it and swap between these and the R-1 ags for summer/winter duty. I've run this in conditions ranging from 90 degrees to less than 0 without issue. Starts right up and has had zero maintenance issues. All in all this is an extremely well built machine. I'm not sure about the newer units but my feeling is they are probably not built as well as this. The only reason I gave it 4 stars on features is due to the age. There is no hydro feature which is not an issue for me but for some looking for more creature comforts this may not be for them. Other than that the only other item I would like to add are rear outlets to run some additional hydraulic options but this can easily be added with a third function valve and a few parts.

Pros: Powerful, reliable, great build quality, timeless design, easy to handle.
Cons: None other than the age for some may be a deal breaker.

High Mile JD 1070
Model Year: 1997

Bought this tractor with high hours but am still amazed at how well it performs. I had always thought the "70" series was/is one of the best John Deere produced closely followed by the "90" series but the older 1070 was in my price range where the comparable 990 was beyond my check book. So far there has not been anything I have wanted to do that this tractor could not handle. I use it mostly for clearing land (moving trees, debris pile and brush hogging). Just hope it last as long as I need it.

Pros: Well built machine with the right amount of power.
Cons: None yet other than high hours (not the tractors fault).

JD1070 John Deere
JD 1070 and 430 Loader
Model Year: 1996

Very capable tractor. The build quality and overall capabilities are probably greater than necessary for the jobs we use it for. However, we also abuse it in ways it was not intended, so the extra strength is appreciated. Used mostly for field mowing, rototilling garden and horse arena, towing a trailer for hauling firewood, post holes, driveway maintenance, moving manure. Occasional use for grading, moving stumps, etc. The loader is awesome. The chain hooks welded to the top of the bucket are very handy, but worrisome as it makes abuse more likely. Quick release on the bucket is great, we have a forklift attachment and use that to move pallets and equipment stored on pallets. The low rating for the dealer is due solely to poor repair service. A hydraulic cylinder on the loader leaks like crazy, and a repair did not address the issue.

Pros: Quality and dependability.
Cons: Complexity of operation and repair.

John Deere 1070 Loader and 8a Backhoe
Model Year: 1992

Got a good deal on this tractor for $11,000. The only downfall is not 4 WD. Backhoe works great and digs deeper than I thought.

Pros: Affordable and powerful.
Cons: Should have bought 4WD version.

Real trouble free tractor
Model Year: 1997

I had a 970 before the 1070 and both are trouble free tractors. They are manual shift whereas hydrostat would be nice but on the other hand no complaints.

Pros: just a good reliable little tractor with lots of guts.
Cons: none ohter than at times it would be nice to have hydrostat.

JD1070 John Deere
JD 1070 used as a hobby farm general purpose tractor
Model Year: 1986

I got the 1070 new with ag tires and a 70 loader. I have run it continuously as a snow plowing, rototilling, pto generating, fence post hole drilling, road grading, trailer pulling tool. All I've ever done to it is change oil and filters and grease it. My accountant complains I don't use enough fuel every year (18 gallons or so). It has loaded rear tires. It loads nice on a car hauler for helping friends and neighbors yet is heavy enough to hold its own for the hay mower and NH1012 pickup wagon. I put a canopy on it for looks and rain and snow cover. I often use the loader hydraulic circuits for other things: motors, plow angle, mower header lift and tongue swing. fits in the garage and is easy to get on and off. Starts quick in winter with the glow air warmer feature. Had a voltage regulator go bad on it, replaced with new. Same for the battery. I added rear spot lights for night work and that was easy. The loader is easy on and off. You can do it all without getting off the machine. I have a mid mount mower for it but its too much trouble to put on and remove. Now I have a 7' rear finish mower. I believe the tractor is still worth more than I paid for it, based on the Michgan Farm Trader ads I see every month with a few 1070s in it for sale.

Pros: 4 dealers within 15 miles of me. Plenty of power, sips fuel, 4wd for snow plowing. power steering.
Cons: Its getting older and I worry about parts like a clutch some day.
