4720 John Deere
A Good Machine
Model Year: 2005

I bought this tractor new with all accessories I could get. It's been a very good machine overall. The hydraulics are slower than I like and the air conditioning filter is way too small. It clogs up with dust in 20 minutes if working in dusty conditions, which means the air conditioning quits working until you stop and clean it. When setting the parking brake, it sometimes jams, leaving you locked up. The only way to fix it is craw under and pry it loose, which is not an easy task. Other than that, it is a great product. It runs all day on less than a tank of fuel, and with 4-wheel drive will go anywhere. There is plenty of power. It is very dependable and starts every time, even in cold weather. It's much better quality than the Kubota I've owned before. I would buy it again.

Pros: Overall a strong dependable tractor
Cons: s#Slow hydraulics, air conditioner filter too small, parking brake poor design

Great Large Compact Tractor
Model Year: 2014

I bought this tractor to upgrade from my John Deere 755. It is way more than I needed, but when has that stopped most of us. It has a cab and the 400CX loader. The e-hydro transmission is great; mine has the power match option that controls the rpm based on load and power needs. I highly recommend this option. It came with 0 rear hydraulic sets, so I shelled out the money and bought both rear kits, so now I have three. I don't like the lack of modulation with the electric over hydraulic controls, but there is no other option with the cab. The 400CX loader is stout, but will only lift 1,500-2,000 lbs before the rear of the tractor is off the ground. It is rated at 3,500 lbs, so rear counter weights are needed to lift that much.

Pros: Great power, great transmission, very capable, fairly compact
Cons: Very light in rear if the tractor, slightly narrow for the height

2011 John Deere 4720
Model Year: 2011

Excellent tractor for everyday small farm use. It's perfect for a garden that would range from 2 to 5 acres. It does very well mowing 15 acres of pasture and general everyday use. This is the first cab tractor I've owned and I'm not sure why I didn't buy one sooner.

Pros: Very powerful for it's size, Easy to operate all controls and they're in the right positions.
Cons: No room for any kind of storage of tools, etc. in cab.

JD 4720

This tractor is good on fuel economy. Has plenty of power. But lacks in hydraulic pump capacity. JD attachments like the front end loader are not made as strong as the old machines were. I have had to change the front wheel bearings and seals.

Pros: Lots of power.
Cons: Needs more hydraulic pump power.

My John Deere 4720 Cab Model & 400 CX Loader
Model Year: 2011

Overall I am very satisfied with the 4720, however, we have had a few problems which have all been fixed under warranty. The service was great! The vertical casting on the left front axle had a casting flaw and was leaking oil. The casting was replaced. One bucket cylinder developed an internal leak shortly after the one year warranty expired. John Deere did replace the cylinder under warranty. The water pump started leaking antifreeze, the pump was removed and resealed. This tractor is stored in a heated garage. The cab is a must in this country. Our previous tractor was an open station John Deere 4600 and we enjoy the cab and additional horse power. I am happy with the tractor and service from John Deere.

Pros: Hydro-static drive, cab, self leveling loader, E-PTO, John Deere service, basically the tractor does everything well.
Cons: The tractor likes its fuel, no screen in front of radiator, standard exhast system blows a lot of dust and debris in the air.

Uber Comfortable and Powerful
Model Year: 2012

This 4720 cab tractor was an upgrade to a 3038E model. Primarily used for brush hogging with an MX6 rotary cutter. Tractor has done everything I'd hoped for and more. The cool clean air eliminates the sinus headaches I used to get after mowing on the 3038E. The heavier and bigger 4720 can really manage the MX6 cutter better than the little 3038E and feels much more stable and safe to operate. I've had no problems except the ERR 73 which I'm sure is a bad ground connection that I've haven't traced down yet. Hopefully 25 years as an electrical engineer will come in handy!

Pros: Clean and quiet cab, loads of power, very maneuverable.
Cons: Expensive!

Love This Tractor
Model Year: 2007

I bought this tractor with following accessories cab with air ride seat radio front end. Loader the 400 cx with bucket and forks. Cab is great air is a must lots of glass so you can see out great but sun will kill ya with out the air. CX loader is wonderful keeping bucket or forks level while raise or lowering. Good power and front wheel assist it keeps moving ahead in mud & snow. We have owned many JD tractors in the last 45 years but this is the most fun and universal tractor we ever had. At the time, it was a bit hard to justify the cost but after having it, I would do it again. I have to put in cons to be fair: one is cost, other is fuel economy not very good. The rest is A plus in my books.

Pros: Cab, air, air ride seat, CX loader, power.
Cons: Cost, fuel economy.

Runs Like a Deere
Model Year: 2011

Bought this tractor 7/20/2011 with a 485 backhoe and the 400cx loader on it. I have used both ends of this tractor and the tractor it's self has performed great. I had a little bit of problems with the O-rings on the 485 backhoe. The o-rings on the spanner nuts on 2 of the hydraulic rams went out and of course you cannot just buy the O-rings them selves so you have to purchase the entire rebuild kit for the rams @ 50.00ea. It was covered under the warranty so it cost me nothing to repair and I did the repairs myself to save time. The spool valve for the loader went south on me also and I replaced it with a new spool valve supplied by John Deere under warranty. Bought this tractor with the cab and it is great having that cab. :0)

Pros: Runs great and does all you need to do with it.
Cons: Still early to say but I think the hydraulics might be a little too much for the componets used in the system.

John Deere 4720 Hydro
Model Year: 2011

This is my 2nd 4720 that I've owned. It took me a while to get used to the tightness that the newer model 4720 has, and the distinctive motor sound. I really enjoy the turbo sound! I got the less aggressive tires on this tractor, they are wider and it makes the tractor sit a little lower to the ground, which I don't really like, but a nice trade off to no tracks on my lawn. Love the Hydro for doing the work around my farm that I do.

Pros: Power, sound, convenience of controls, comfort.
Cons: The I-hitch still hits the hydraulic hoses when raised all the way up.

Bad to the Bone
Model Year: 2006

This has to be the strongest tractor in it class. I have put this tractor to the test. It can bush hog at 6.5 mph cutting waist high grass in no strain. Also, I use this tractor at our body shop to move damaged cars around I have picked up the front of a Chevy Tahoe with nothing on the rear of the tractor and move it anywhere we need it. I pull a 8ft frontier disk dh1396 it is very heavy, but it's no problem to pull this disk 5/6 mph getting it done in hurry. You will be ready to quit before this tractor runs out of fuel. It only holds 15 gallons.

Pros: Plenty.
Cons: None.

A good tractor that is light enough to transport but strong enough to do most jobs. I like the FEL with float system and four wheel drive gives you more versatility in a smaller tractor.

Pros: Easy to use and very versatile.
Cons: Needs heavier 3-point hook up arms.

4720 John Deere
Get a Kubota
Model Year: 2007

Got the 4720 as an upgrade from a 35 HP hydrostatic Kubota. The machine works fine when it is working, but just off the truck the fuel gauge didn't work, the hydraulics bled down so quickly that I couldn't maintain a bushog in consistent position to mow, then after 200 hours, the hydrostatic transmission went out. The stabilizers on the three point have broken off several times, had to be welded back on, electronic system has had intermittent faults which the dealer can't seem to fix, and the fuel tank is set so it lets rain water build up and get into the fuel tank. The proprietary front bucket attachment prevents you from getting the range of front implements at a decent price which you could if it had the standard skid-steer attachment setup, but I'm sure JD makes lots of money when you have to get implements through them. All this I might expect for a bottom tier tractor at a bargain price, but not from one of the most expensive tractors in its class. Overall, a disappointment. I had a great experience with the Kubota, just remember that a hydrostatic drive needs a bigger engine for a given performance so goo to the top end of horsepower for a given chassis size.

Pros: Runs well when it is running. Has split brake on opposite side from tredle pedal, so you can use teh breaks to stear while using the hydrostatic drive which you can't in the Kubota.
Cons: Terrible reliability and quality.

New 2009 John Deere 4720 - R4 tires, Load Match, Auto Cruise, 400CX Loader, Rear SCV, Canopy, Skid Steer Attachment Carrier, Deere 4-in-1 SS Bucket
Model Year: 2009

So far the tractor has excelled at every task - mostly box blading, moving dirt, brush, etc. Used in very wet conditions, and the 4WD has performed extremely well - it has gotten me out of several sticky situations. Very comfortable operator station and controls. This is my first FEL tractor, and it took me a few hours to get comfortable with the joystick - I tended to over-adjust initially, and learned to be more subtle, with slower movements. Definitely requires 1100+ lbs of ballast, particularly with heavy SS attachments. Starts immediately, even in 25 degree temperatures. Loadmatch is an awesome feature, effectively eliminating stalls during heavy engine/hydraulic demand. Love the eHydro transmission - it is extremely efficient during loader operation. Fuel consumption of about 1-1.5 gal/hr when operated under 20k rpm; increases significantly at higher rpms. Overall, a very capable and user friendly machine.

Pros: Engine power, eHydro transmission, 4WD, loader, features, Loadmatch, operator comfort, dealer experience
Cons: Engine is somewhat noisy; a little pricey but value is there

4720 Deere is a Great Tractor
Model Year: 2006

Really like this tractor. Power to spare. Never heard anyone wishing they had less power, so it pays to go high when you can. I bought this used with a backhoe. Retail new would have been nearly 45K and I got it for about 26K. Recommend most buy a used tractor from a major manufacturer with few hours. You can't go wrong

Pros: well built and all major systems including engine are great
Cons: parts are expensive but probably true for most major brands
