4520 (cab, e-hydro, e-pto, 3rd SCV) First impressions after 30 hours
Model Year: 2009
So far so good. At 60HP (50 PTO) you'll loose traction before you run out of power. I have R4's, so that's especially true. Have the R4's because 75% of the use of this will be mowing. Most of my area is in hay (farmed by another farmer), with a few cut throughs in the woods, 2 ponds. With my MX6 6' rotary cutter, I cut grass in a hay field that had not been cut all year at 5 MPH in one pass. That is what the 50HP does for me. With the cab, I'm cool and my eyes aren't full of dust. I run the sickle bar with the E-PTO (sickle bar shown in the picture), no problems. 6' box blade pulled OK in 4WD with front weights. Engine is a bit loud, but in cab it's OK. I still wear hearing protection, but that is so I can hear every little noise it makes to hear what's going on. Cab very comfortable, but I upgraded the seat to the air cushion seat. Getting in is a precise trajectory (I'm 6'3, 195 #s). But once you land everything fits very well. Try it on for size to see if this is OK for you. Ongoing squeaking from the steering wheel, but you can take it apart, lube it, and it's good for 3-4 months. There is some annoying play in the rockshaft control due to a mix of the way the lever is mounted and the cable linkage. Try it out before you buy to see if it's OK. I've adapted to it just fine. The gear shift (a-b-c) is difficult to work and see what gear you're in. No indicator, you just have to get used to it. That could have been done better. Like all tractors, the transition to 4WD is best done while moving a bit or rocking forwards or backwards- again try this at your dealer. Heater hoses rub on the cab structure where they enter, I had to put a nylon wrap over them. The same hoses make removing the oil filter a little rough but doable with a strap type oil filter wrench. Too bad the display in this series is so dumb- it's a 8 character display. If you can get a GPS for $200, they could have a display that tells you what's wrong instead of a cryptic "ERR 123" code. The computer control/E-Hydro is a great feature hiding behind a stifled dashboard. No problems with the layout, it just could be so much more. Turn radius is great- this is a great frame size for a compact tractor. Of course since it's a Deere, it's a bit pricey but then again I'll be able to get parts for in 20 years just like I can for my JD 318 garden tractor I bought in 1990. My reliability rating at this point is just based on reputation and experience with that JD318. If you're very price sensitive, I would imagine the 4320 would also be just fine as peak horsepower is not need most of the time.
Pros: Great power, size, cab. Frame size and turning radius are wonderful!
Cons: loose linkage due to cab, awkward gear shift, heat hoses, steering wheel squeaks rough spots in an otherwise clean design
