your take on this diesel additive test?

I think it's nice that someone went to the trouble of putting all that together, but other than that, I don't think much of it. I have run Power Service in 3 diesel vehicles for the past 3 years and have had great results with it. I know run it in the tractor as well and it works fine. The reasons I use it are because I can see and feel that it makes a difference, it's readily available locally, and the price is reasonable. The most important thing is to run something in your ULSD that at least adds lubricity back to the fuel.

I think it was a good test and shows all the hubub, crap, and misleading information in advertisements and marketing. Some of the products tested advertised improved lubricity and it did not improve lubricity in some cases and made it worse in a few.

I participated in some of the discussions and read most all the posts there were going about it and there is a lot of information about fuel and such. The report doesn't do all the discussions justice but does summarize the test fine.

One intersting blurb in one of the posts was "dawn dish washing detergent" may have a really good wear scar test but it aint a good diesel additive. So the test is not definative end all for best additive it just addresses lubricity.

You will hear 1000's of guys say well I have run this brand or that for years without a problem. And its probably true the other duties of the additive may out weigh its lubricity package. But the test did show hands down which was best for lubricity.

One of the biggest things I took from the test and discussions is that quality of diesel fuel varies quite a bit. Good filter maintenance is advised and probably should run some type of additive occasionally for tank, line, and system maintenance.

just curious - your post says "The reasons I use it are because I can see and feel that it makes a difference," - just what are you looking at and feeling??

thanks

I was running the white PS at each fill up, but switched to the Walmart Outboard motor oil based on that study.. Luckily my truck is pre 2007 so no problem running that.

I personally rely on others for advise and then try to make an educated decision - which as WH401 mentioned what is available locally play into that as well..

If you go to the PS website it pretty much says that for lubricity you need the silver bottle (which is used in the study) and for winterization you need the white bottle..

I'm looking at the fact that after I replaced the seals in my 92's injection pump ,and I started using PS at that same time, that the pump didn't start leaking again, like it did when I ran an untreated tank of ULSD through it when it was first introduced. I can feel the difference because when I switch from the white in the winter to the gray in the summer, I get a slight little boost in power because the gray bottle has a higher cetane rating. You could say that that's "summer blend" fuel, or it's "just in your head", but with the power rating of that truck, it's very easy to feel even the slightest difference in power. And I'll throw in the fact that I can also hear the difference because in the winter neither of my truck's rattle as much on start up from the cold as they did without an additive, and the tractor is the same way so far.

Just finished a jug of Stanadyne PF, I'm going to try some of that Opti stuff next.

What's that stuff in the #1 spot ?

thanks - its nice to see some factual observations vs the normal "just because I say so" you get a lot of times on forums.. hehe

Curious as to why PS didn't want to participate. Looks like the product sucks for lubricity. Of course, they only had one version of the PS product line.

Looks like opti lube is the best bang for the buck.

Thanks for sharing this.
