I planted a couple plots last Thursday and the next three days we had tons of rain. It's been a week now (with 80 temps and sun all day the past four) and no sign of it breaking through the ground. I'm wondering if the excess rain was too much. The ground suface is not crusty, but it's heavy clay and still damp on top. I planted at 1 inch deep.

How long should I wait before replanting?

Thanks!

I would give it a wk.of sun.If you replant you are taking the chance of a double plant. Not good ,too thick.

Check your soil temperature at the depth you planted at.

Over 55 degrees and it should come up within 1 week. Less than 55 degrees and the germination time goes up really fast for each degree less in temperature; sometimes up to 35 days for a soil temp of 50 degrees. <OUCH!>

You say it's heavy clay soil, but not crusty. Is it very cloddy or waterlogged from all that rain?

Dig up a few kernels and see if they have sprouted. An inch is a bit shallow, but close. May take a few more days to show through.

Should be fine, corn can take 3 weeks to come up in cold or too wet conditions.

Dig a few kernals up see if if they are srpouted or what.

A week si a pretty short time, at 2 weeks you can start wondering, but won't be a problem until you get 3 weeks out...

Thanks guys....

I will give it another week or so. Didn't know how long corn seed would last in damp ground, but sounds like that is not a worry yet...

When you say wet, are we talking just wet or was it/did it stay flooded or have pooled water in that area? That can wipe out germination. Your best indicator would be to dig a few of the kernels up to check their progress. It has been warm enough to germinate and with good moisture they should be on their way to break the surface as long as you don't have some problem with bad seed, chemical carryover, or insect problems. If you dig up the seeds you should be seeing roots and one main stem emerging from the seed by now.

I planted my corn back in the end of march when we had those 80 degree days down in western illinois. I just checked mine last weekend and its just starting to pop out the ground.

Mine came up at 9 days... I'm gonna run the Garden-Way planter down the rows about 2 inches away and deep and fertilize it using the Beet Plate. (Somebody on here said that worked good for them, so I'll give it a try)

Wow, you planted in March? That's early, but glad to hear it finally came up.

It should be fine, give it another week, then let us know.
