I was wondering how a YM 1700 or simular small 2wd compares to the a slightly smaller 4wd tractors just looking at specs the YM 1401d has ~17 gross hp and weights in at 1168 assuming 100% of the weight would be used for traction would a ym1700 2wd which weights in at ~1829 have about the same traction assuming 70/30 or more split? at approx. 4 more hp and approx. $1000 difference and alot less tires and parts to break?

I've hear that a smaller 4wd performs similar to a 2wd tractor 20-30% larger.

That % puts you close in the hp range.. but there is still the money issue.. and the pto hp issue. Just have to decide what you want.

If you are getting a front end loader... as much as I hate to say it.. I'd lean toward the 4wd. ( When I say 'hate' to say it... what I mean is I generally try to by the largest tractor I can for my money, but not too large for the task.. etc .. excess HP is never wasted. )

A word of advice... these tractors are too light to make use of the hp they have.. even the 4wd ones will easilly spin in soft material when pulling a load. Don't get me wrong.. big ones get stuck too... My 4wd NH 1920 ( 33hp 3500# ) got stuck in a dry -looking- pond bed... sunk down to the axles in muck..

If you aren't doing loader work... I'd get a larger 2wd.

There are other factors to consider.. like terain.. if ya gots lots of hills.. then I lean back to the 4wd... gives you some breaks via the drivetrain connection when going down hill.

Let us know what you plan on doing with it, and your area.. etc.

thanks the first link was what i was wondering.

I won't be putting a loader on it. some hilly terrain 1-5% some mountians 15-30% but i'll have a MFWDA tractor if i need for that. Mainly interested in knowing 90% of the local's have 2wd.

I'm debating on what to buy i'd like something that has a large platform so i might be wasting my time i'm remember the only reason i didn't get a FX tractor was i kept hitting my legs and felt way too cramped so i guess i'll go find a tractor dealer and browse. Any platform size comparisons?

By the way anyone got some of the model details like i know the 10's are powershift what was the 01 02 and the G B D OLD Thanks

1 and 2 s are 3 cyl., the 10 is power shift, and the 20 is the power shift on the steering colum

Um.. if you want an open platform.. the 1700 is the minimum.. and it is the same basif frame assemble as the 2000 as well.. so if you want bigger area.. you'll probably have to hit a 2200.. etc.... but the 1700 was decent enough for me.. cozy I guess... on the other hand, my platform on the 8n is real open.. so open if you hit a bump you can fly off!
