X748SE after X540 - Awesome!

Jan did the yard and one pasture last week between thunderstorms - finished in ~4.2 hrs and used ~1/2 tank (~3.2 gal) off-road diesel ($2.65/gal). The x540/54 would have taken at least 6 hrs, and used ~1 1/2 tanks (~7.5 gal) regular gas ($2.79/gal). She's very pleased with the x748's lack of vibration and smooth ride - the air seat and big tires really help out on neck & back strain.

.
Where do you Get your off road diesel.
I was getting it delivered but the out fit got out that business .:(

Cenex coop in Hudson WI. Have not found any reference or directory thru net searches "off-road diesel" or "tax-free diesel". Bulk fuel dealers supply it delivered, but at Cenex you just pump it yourself for a bit le$$ than regular gas. Just don't put it in your truck - $8,000 fine in WI and they check for red in the tank at traffic stops. I've heard one fillup with red dyed diesel can be detected in the tank and fuel system for a long, long time. Not worth the risk at least around here.

One of the Shell stations here in town has a couple of "off road" diesel pumps. I sure appreciate having it available when I need it since I don't use enough to buy in bulk. Because of local lakes, and vacation homes, etc. there are a number of lawn care services, etc. too so perhaps that is why it is easier to find around here.

July 4 update: Jan mowed 4 smaller pastures yesterday while I was baling (first cut :( - been raining here non-stop for past 4 weeks). Cut 4.2 acres tall grass with more'n a few daisies, including some very thick grass below the poop piles. Metered 3.7 hours and burned 2.4 gal diesel. She's more & more happy with the machine - look at that smile! Sets the cruise, then sits back and enjoys the quiet and the ride, long as I fill the tank to get started.

Now...need to find a way to mount the sunshade I got for the x540 on the x748. The shade lower mounting bracket is narrow to fit the 540, so have to cob something together to adapt the bracket to the wider 748 lower frame. Also, looking into a hydraulic front blade - we need something small and maneuverable for pushing snow and to fit through the side barn doors to clean the stall floors. Considering a small skidsteer (e.g. Bobcat S100 or 553), but I think a 54" blade on the AWD x748 might do the trick - lots cheaper, and wouldn't have to have yet another wheeled machine around.

Any input on x7xx/front blade performance???

"The radiator air intake screens are low, at the base of the steering/engine cowl, so they get clogged up with grass real fast - easy enough to just brush off by hand, and the temp gauge tells you when you need to, but not the best arrangement"

CCL,
I have a 2001 X595 with the 62C deck and also had a problem with the grass blowing up clogging the screens. I read on here about a Anti
Blowout Kit for the 62C. I ordered one and installed it and it did cut down alot on the problem but not all. Was well worth it. Not sure if JD corrected the problem with your deck or not. The kit was something like $32 and goes on the bottom front of the deck and replaces what is already on the deck. Might be worth checking into. These machines are great and until you own and use one, it's hard to explain to someone that does not have one just what they are capable of doing. Enjoy your X748SE.

Curt.
