X500 towing capacity

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know the towing capacity of the X500?

I've poked around the john deere website but I can't find the answer anywhere.

I'm looking to build a decent-sized lawn roller but I don't want to overtax my tractor.

My property is about 3 acres on a gentle slope.

I have a 18" x 48" concrete roller made from an old water heater. It works great and I pull it with a 740 and my neighbor pulls it all over with his 720. I think it weighs around 900-1000# if I remember correctly. From that I would think something in the neighborhood of 6-700# would work for you. If it is soft when you roll, you may need chains on.

You could possibly find a tank and make a water filled one that would be weight adjustable. The nice thing about concrete, if you hit a stone it don't bend.

I try not to go on steep grades with mine but fairly flat areas work great. I though about adding about 3-400 extras ponds but haven't figures that out yet. That is what works for me.

I have very similar tank with concrete as does Deere Dude (would guess smaller diam tho). It also has a steel rack on top with several 70# silo staves stacked.

Initially, I pulled it with my 8hp Wheel Horse, then my JD 212, and on to a 425, 455, and X485. The Wheel Horse did just fine, and a bit better than the variable speed drive that the 212 had.

I suspect weight on the tractor for traction will be the only limiting factor. Plenty of horses to pull it. As mentioned, watch very carefully when going down hill, as that roller will push you and jacknife the rig very quick. The only saving factor then is if you can outrun it to stay in front.
