Workmaster operating and maint. questions

Hello again everyone,

I'm waiting on my manuals to get here. But I'm about to die to change the fluids in this thing. So can someone give me a run down on how to change the tranny oil, hyd. oil, etc. How much and what kind to put in? I see that the Hyd. only holds 2 gallons from tractor data. Thats kinda weird that the trans, rear end, and hyd only uses 2 gallons, don't they share fluid? And would you believe that there is not ONE single how to video on you tube of how to do this. I found that odd, but not for long LOL

And right under the seat on the right side on top of the trans case there is a little lever that pushes down. What is this for?

102,945 members on this site and not one of you has serviced the trans,rear,and hydraulics on a 600 series Ford??? LOL Guess I gotta wait on the manual.

message only just been here over a day.

and no it's not a common sump.

it has a seperate trans, diffy, and rear end.

not much to say about servicing them.

drain oil and refill.

trans fill is on top of trans.. level check is a blug ( not a bolt ) on right side of trans just a lil above the running board ).. fill till oil dribbles out. utf fluid meeting m2c134d or 80w90 gear oil.

hyd oil fill is under left front of seat.. holds utf fluid ( walmart / tsc fluid is fine ).. I advise against putting aw plain hyd oils in there and instead use only UTF oil as if you have a leaky seal it can mix with the diffy/

diffy has fill under back right side of seat.. level check is a pip plug on the back left side of the left axle trumpet.

80w90 gear oil or utf fluid.


ps, you might want to be a lil more patient next time before posting a message like post #2 again. I'm sure you will have plenty of other questions on that machine in the future.. jumping up and down and getting exasperated isn't always the best way to get answers.

I have about a dozen or more of similar models from 1953 thru 1964

No exasperation here, hence the whole lol at the end of the post. I was just joking around is all. I will have to be more careful with my choice of words in the future, sorry if offense was taken. I am however impressed with the number of registered users on this site though. I don't think I have ever been a member of any forum with that many registered users. Thank you Soundguy for all of your help I do appreciate it. I'm just a playful person and don't really take life to seriously. Its too short to be to serious. this is one of the best tractor sites I've found. I currently red and post on about a dozen of them.

Lotsa good people here.. good info on everything from cooking to housewireing cars n trucks, animals and even occasionally a tractor thread

55-64 is my favorite year range. got a bunch of them and play with them often.

Thanks, I think I've created a monster though. I still want an 8N, for some reason I just want that flat head L4. And SWMBO (she who must be obeyed) okd 10k so, I think I'm ahead of the game LOL.

you can get a cherry one that's had a showroom resto for 3.5 to 4k...

Oh wow, really? Why is that? So since I went 53+ first I won't be to thrilled about the N? I know they have more power, but from just looking at them they look kinda the same from the engine back.

n have non live pto and non live hyds. some 55+ machines have live pto. anything that is *6* has a 2 stage clutch.. and *71 and *81 models have independent pto.

the live hyds is one of the big deals.

oin an N when you press the clutch.. you loose hyds, as the hydro pump is in the belly and run off the pto.. thus if pto not turning, then no hyds. on 53+, hydro is mounted on engine and runs any time engine does.

55+ has better rear axle seals.

ohv engine of 53+ breathes better.

8xx models have a heavier/beefier rear end then N or 6xx ( 5xx, 7xx or 9xx ) models.

plenty of other lil differences...

Wow soundguy, that is a great post. That explained alot. So what is the purpose in an over run clutch for the PTO? Do I need one for ole red.
