I'm prepping for repainting the roll bar on my B9200 Kubota. I've sanded most of it with coarse grit for good paint adhesion.

There are some areas, however, that are difficult to sand so have wire brushed.
I'm concerned that primer and/or enamel won't stick well to the wire brushed surfaces because it leaves a very smooth slick finish.

Would like to have the item sand blasted but that doesn't seem to be an option. (No vendors)

What has been your experience with paint sticking to a surface that's been power wire brushed with no subsequent sanding?
I'm planning on cleaning well with solvent prior to primer and paint.

Thanks in advance.

use an etching primer then regular primer over top (I would suggest a epoxy primer) then a good acrylic enamel should stick with out any problems i've done this alot and has worked for my 20+ years of painting try to stay away from rattle can stuff it wont last very long and lose its shine fast, scratches easily. hope this helps. PS remember to use a red scuff pad in between coats.

So are you saying that this regimen will adhere to a wire brushed surface?

There are several liquid type products out that will prep the surface for painting, no sanding or wire brushing needed. Often time is a factor after the sanding prep liquid is applied and before paint is applied so be sure to read the instructions.
Check at your local sherwin williams, Pittsburgh paint store or other such pro paint supply store. Local box store might have them.

Wire brush with a handle or wire brush on a grinder? U really need to lay some elbow grease down on a non angle grinder type. Use a cup brush on a angle grinder if you really want it to get down to bare metal.

Nothing will really work to "convert" rust into something that paint will stick to for a long time. Get it down to bare metal or at least paint with out rust under it.

Just to clarify: I'm not dealing with rust in this case but just wanted to get the old paint off. Now down to bare metal and wondering if the powered wire brush leaves a "too smooth" surface for paint to adhere.

Nothing will be as good as a coarse grit blast, but power wire brushing is an accepted practice for surface prep of steel. I doubt that your ROPS has been grit blasted when it was built. Most painted items now are just solvent cleaned and then spray painted or powder coated which is why most will flake off rather quickly in their lifetime because the paint has no substrate to adhere to.
Power brush with a stiff wire bristle bush should give you a better surface than the factory solvent cleaned. Check industrial paint suppliers like Sherwin Williams or Pittsburg Paint for a good primer coat. Epoxy will adhere better but will chalk bad if exposed to a lot of sunlight and some epoxy primers wont take well to other types of paint so it is best to consult with a knowledgeable paint supplier rather than a Lowes or Walmart.

If the paint isnt pealing and you have no rust its perfectly fine to paint over whats there. After all it is a tractor and not a show car.
