will a cub cadet 149 move large hay bales?

I have 2 new-to-me cub cadet 149's and I am wondering if they would move large hay bales with a spear.
This is just to load and unload the truck in the shed.

I just googled cub cadet 149 and came up with a riding lawn mower. You have got to be kidding. The bale weighs twice what the 149 weighs!

Maybe large hay bales is a relative term.. I think that garden tractor would have no trouble at all moving a 1x1 hay bale don't you?:laughing:

If it can move dirt around like packing peanuts, then it should be able to lift a bale of hay.

That front bucket has a capacity of about two big wheelbarrows. Plus, he has the backhoe for a counter-weight.

It's still a garden tractor, and I don't think it would pick up one of my 4x5 rolls. But, you are welcome to try. Please post a link to the video. We could all use a good laugh.

How much does a large hay bale weigh? The homemade loader on the video I think would be fairly safe with maybe a 300 lb bale. Maybe 400 if you were feeling froggy. Not to mention the lift height.

Not to say the little garden tractor with the FEL is not useful. I am sure it would beat the heck out of a shovel for spreading gravel or dirt, or picking up a round of wood or a thousand things.. Just don't think it is going to be much of a big 1200 or heavier round bale mover. Sorry.

One needs to think a bit before asking this kind of question. No tractor can lift more than it weighs no matter how much counterweight it has. Adding too much counterweight could break an axle. Typically they can only lift about 1/4 of their bare tractor weight safely.

my nickel says the axles will fail as you try to life a 4x5.. even a dry loose one.

You didn't say what size bale.

Around here a "large bale" is 5x6 and weighs 1300 to 1500 pounds, depending on the moisture content.

This large bale weighs 1391 pounds.


Where is that lift capacity measured? The farther out from the loader arms, the less weight it will lift.
