It is all about shot placement. A pig can run a ways, or worse, turn on you, if only wounded. I have personally witnessed a 9mm shot to the head of a pig from 40-50ft away that did not stop it.

No, you missed the point...I traded something I didn't want for something I wanted and that served my purpose. I wasn't looking for a safe warmer or an investment....anyway it a bit off topic so let's let this one go.

Although I don't think wild hogs are dangerous game, I have seen a sow protect her piglets. When I was 17, there were wild hogs near where I lived. There was a large area of woods and swamp that ran about 5 miles between my house and the next town along the shore of Lake Pontchartrain in LA. I had a 90 lb yellow lab and I used to take him with me in the woods hunting squirrels. One day we saw a couple of piglets and Max bounded over there to play with them... then out of nowhere came the sow with all the hair standing up on her back! she rolled Max up in a ball and was all over him! All I could do was shoot up in the air to scare the hog away. Max came out unhurt, but would never approach a piglet again...

Were you on the Northshore? Maybe Fountainbleau State Park. They have had issues with them.

My friend and I were treed by a sow when we accidentally got between her and her piglets. We were about 15 and "armed" with bb guns. She circled the tree for a while then went after her young. Kind of scary at the time but I've never been afraid to be in the woods with them. Occurrences like that are so rare I doubt I'll ever be in that circumstance again.

In the movie "ole yeller" the dog, ole yeller helped save Travis who fell out of a tree, from getting eaten by the swine, but was wounded, and later died.
Also note the phrase "who cried when ole yeller died?". This is from the movie with Bill Murray, Stripes.
