WiFi ready blueray players

With the WiFi ready Blueray players what are my options for connecting the internet. I am looking at the Sony BDP-S470 and it has the ethernet and usb port.

The writeups I have read so far have mentioned either plugging directly into a network or going with a wifi adapter that plugs into the ethernet port. While not mentioned Sony lists a USB adapter in its accessory list for this player. Long story short is I am trying to find the cheapest way to get this player connected to the internet either wirelessly to my router or in the worst case scenerio having to run a wire. If its going to cost too much I will just go with the Blueray player with WiFi built in.

The Sony I am looking at is only $60 right now which is what made me consider it.

My Samsung came with the wifi dongle. You just set it up like any other computer in your house.

I was thinking that would work on this one as well but I have no experience with it and don't want to spend more money trying to hook it up to the internet then what the next level player up would cost with wifi built it.

Have you researched what you actually get out of the internet connectivity? When I briefly looked into it, it looked like you get access to a subset of services on the internet, and it was focused around extra monthly fee services, like netflix.

It didn't look like you could just browse the internet or play Hulu videos for free. Was there internet functionality that you found useful?

I already subscribe to netflix and can watch it through one TV with my Wii, I have used Sony Blueray players at my girlfriends with the wifi and was able to watch youtube videos, listen to Pandora, watch Netflix all without having to use the computer. The main thing I like is that the software will update if you have it connected to the internet much like computers do.

When there is nothing good on TV it is nice to play around and watch YouTube videos on a big screen TV. The quality is actually better then I ever expected. And Pandora is great as well if you like music without commercials and talking and the ability to skip over songs.

We just bought my FIL a 'roku' box ($99 - radio shack) instead of the blu-ray player to stream netflix..

1) we went with the roku because they already had a blu-ray player and they just wanted to stream netflix
2) Depending on the retailer sales prices - the "wifi-ready" blu-ray players were more expensive after buying the usb adapter than the wifi-built-in players - IF you must to wireless - shop around for sales
3) Based on previous experiences, I am sure the ethernet connection would allow higher speeds than via wifi..
4) Unless you really need to play blu-ray movies, the roku would be the cheapest way to go

This is to play blu-ray movies mainly but also to play netflix on the TV that doesn't have the Wii hooked to it and to just have fun with the occasional YouTube night.

I am trying to price out the cost of setting up internet access to this unit compared to buying the wifi ready unit which is why I am asking if the USB wifi adapters would work with this Sony unit. If it was full price then it would be easy but when its only $60 and the WiFi Blu-ray Sony is $200 then it seems like it will be a better deal even after adding WiFi, I am just exploring options.

OK, that makes sense. I'm too cheap to pay an extra monthly fee. I currently hooked an old laptop directly to the TV, so the TV is just a big monitor. I'll admit it is more awkward than a specialized device.

The AVSForum is the best place I have found for information on audio equipment. The link is the thread about the BDP-S470 player.

I just bought the S470 but I intend to connect it to the Internet with Ethernet. The two big mistakes I made when building the house was NOT running Ethernet or a coax for radio reception to the TV area. Bought the two cables a week back to fix my lack of thought. And it is not going to be fun to run the wire with insulation in the wall.

I THINK what I read is that the S470 needs a *** SONY *** WiFi Adapter. People were having problems with non Sony WiFi. The thread I posted will tell you for sure.

For an HD quality video stream you needed something like 5MB Internet service. If you down load the manual for the S470 I am pretty sure they mention the required broadband bandwidth requirement.

We just got the S470 last week and have not really used it. I ran it with a DVD to make sure it worked and that is all. BlueRay's should be here this week. Internet connectivity should be made in a couple of weeks. :laughing:

Thanks, I decided to go with the ethernet cable, a 25' cable will reach from the Blu-ray player to the router by going under the floor. Of course I also ordered a Sony 40" TV and new stand and cables so it will be nice to watch hockey and football at my parents as I am giving the entire system to my dad. He will never update anything until it dies but with his eyes getting worse I think a newer 1080p TV at twice the size of his current TV will help him out. I will just have to teach him how to use Netflix on it.

They have broadband cable from Time Warner for internet so they shouldn't have any problems.
