I maintain 1.25 miles of private gravel road. The dust is just terrible in some spots where houses are close to the road. I used to spread calcium chloride, but the prices are getting out of hand. I looked into millings and oil & chip, but those prices are way too expensive as well.

Yes, this has been discussed here many times, but I keep hoping someone knows of a new & cheaper product or alternative approach to the problem.

As Scooby doo would say;
Rots of ruck with that. :)

If you hear of anything, be sure to let us know...I just paid $910 for 2 dust suppressant applications on the 500 ft. of county road in front of my house. OUCH

Nothing that works is inexpensive. Many of the polymor products sound interesting.
This sounds interesting,

Concrete. Asphalt is cheaper. Water softener salt holds moisture, so apply when its done raining.

Where I lived the council tar sealed 100m either side of the drive way on roads in the pumic region of the county. It was the cheapest option long term. You would go from dirt road to tar seal (house) and back to dirt between houses. This may be your best option,also how many residents on the road?

We called them "oil roads" when I was young.

I remember the township pouring used/waste oil on the roads to keep dust down...then they switched to tar and chip on many of the better roads. I think they still use a calcium-beet juice mixture but I doubt it's cheap

There are 7 residents along the 1.25 mile private road. Most are set back far enough where the dust isn't a problem. This happens every spring after I regrade the road. I usually do it when rain is forecast which controls the dust until the surface packs down. This time, the predicted rainstorm missed us.

In the past, we did oil the road in places but EPA regulations make this nearly impossible now.

I was going to bite the bullet and buy calcium flake to spread myself, but I found a contractor willing to put it down for the same price. Work is supposed to be done today.

That's close to what I'm paying for 550' of 14' wide road. Contractor quoted a price of $400 for a single application of calcium flake. We'll see if a second application is necessary.
