Went to start generator and it ran rough. Removed bowl, cleaned carb jet and drained gas. Ran fine afterwards. The gas had water in it. The gas was treated with marine stabil and the generator is stored in a garage. How can I prevent this from happening again?

It is best to keep the tank full to reduce condensation from forming in the tank.

if you saw liuid water.. then your not using ethanol gas. or it evaped.. or the tank was supersaturated with water ..

normally ethanol gas will absorb water.. so you don't see free water unless it is saturated past what the alcohol can disolve.

I thought using Stabil Marine would prevent this. How about running it dry each time? Thanks for the help.

gas cant be stored very long. thats just a fact of life. Keeping the tank full to the top helps prevent condensation.

Howdy,
A lot of factors come into play. Does the station which you got the gas from have any issues? Do they have a good turnover rate?
Gasoline does not stay good a long long time. The best approach is to siphon it out and rotate it through your vehicle.

Step 1
possibly find a station that sells 100% gasoline.
If not....
find a station which has good turnover and no water issues
Step 2
have a good clean gas can, put in your fuel stabilizer, fill gas can.
Step 3
fill your generator completely up. (full tank helps limit the amount of possible condensation)
Step 4
run your generator, and put a load on it. (at least 20 minutes)
Step 5
fill up the generator completely with gas. check the oil etc...

sit back and relax

remember to test run your generator every now and then.

at some point and time, drain out the gas, put into your car, and get new fresh gas with stabilizer again.

Most generator carbs have a drain plug on them. Use it!
After you have run the gen. drain the carb and let it sit dry until the next time you need it.
You will find it starts much easier even if the fuel in the tank is not the greatest.
As the fuel sits in the carb the volatile components evaporate and these are the ones you need to get the engine to start.
