I'm looking at utility trailers Top Brand,Big Tex, & Quality 6 by 12ft actually about 77 inches wide by 12 ft. My question is, I can get a heavy duty gate on Top Brand and Quality and on the Big Tex (which I like the best) only comes with standard steel mesh Ramp Gate. One of the heaviest items I'll use trailer for in L/T and Loaded 50 gallons sprayer for a total of approx 1200 lbs. In your opinion will the Big Tex Ramp/Gate take this weight. The Salesman says no problem, gate will take up to 2000 lbs. Just want to ask for other opinions. Appreciate any comments.

I've owned a Big Tex Landscape trailer for years, I do general contracting..residential work and the trailer has gotten alot of use.
This a 7000#GVW tandem axle, 7'x12' , had them put brakes on all 4 wheels, and load range D tires, and a steel deck as extras from the factory...by the way.
The gate has proved to be pretty strong, but can you clarify what you will be loading and it's weight so I can give you feedback??
Regarding your salesman saying 2000#, hmmmm, that seems like a little optimistic. That square tubing is thin wall, like around 1/16". And the mesh is just expanded metal lath type material, so any kind of point loads (like wheels would need a pc of plywood or planks soas not to bend the mesh...
Let me know a little more about what you intend to load on the gate so I understand what we are discussing??

I had a BigTex landscape trailer with the mesh gate and it handled my 4110 without any problems. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif We now have a BigTex car hauler w/dove tail & slide out ramps that I really like. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I have a big tex car hauler.. 2x8 wood deck, and heavy duty angle iron ramps. The trailers I see with expanded metal gates are usually the 'yard work'/ landscape units. Still.. see if you can get a HD gate/ramp..e tc.

I would be loading a Lawn Tractor (600 lbs) and a two wheel 50 gal sprayer approx (600 lbs) attached to tractor. So the load would on 6 wheels. Thanks for your comments.

I've had a 6'x12' Big Tex, model 35SA I think, for three years. I drive a 700 pound garden tractor on and off and the metal mesh is showing some deformation, but not enough to be of concern. With me in the seat it's 900+ pounds spread across four wheels, so 1200 pounds across six wheels shouldn't be a problem.

I bought a PJ trailer with the mesh gate and load my nearly 2000 lb Kobota on it.

What I did, since the supports on the mesh were NOT under where the wheels would go, was cut some 2x2x1/8" angle and welded it right at the centerline of the tires. One can of black Krylon later and it looks GREAT. No sagging. See pic.

Dk45 Jeff-

Thanks for reminding me of another 200 lbs.(me). Now a total 1400 lb. I think if I can get the right price, I'll go for it . If there starts to be any problem, I'll just re enforce gate. Many thanks to all for the replies/advice.

We have a couple of trailers (not Big Tex, but similar ramps) that we haul JD 455 mowers on. Not sure of the weight of the mowers, but they're 23HP watercooled diesels, 60" deck. No problem with the ramp at all. Your 1400 pounds will be spread out quite a bit, as the mower and the sprayer trailer won't be on the same set of wheels?

Yes, as the replys above are saying , with some remedial care to take care of the mesh to keep it from distorting that setup will work good.
I think the Big Tex product is pretty good and we have a bunch of different trailers here now for comparison.
Out here in California the trailer dealers sell them at fairly high prices.
Best,
