Does anyone have a JD 650 out there and can look at there starter. There are two terminals on it. The large one at the bottom and small one on the side. My question is there anything hooked up to the small one on the side and what color is the wire? Thanks Mark

Can you post a picture?
The small terminal may be the one to activate the solenoid but a picture will help provide a better answer.

I don't have your type of tractor but there should be a wire hooked up to the small one.
This wire should feed to your ignition switch.

Thanks for the picture. I would ask you to advise if there is a remote starter solenoid. The heavy black cable currently on the starter would go to it before going to the positive battery post.
If the copper lug sticking out of the starter is what is causing you concern, my first reaction is that it is just a power source for the ignition switch and or light switch.
It appears that it has been abandoned by using the round ring terminals with the red and yellow wires on them which are connected to the main battery terminal on the starter.
Do you have a problem or just wanting to be certain something is not connected?

More thoughts.
I found a wiring diagram which seems to show that the second terminal on the starter is to engage the starter solenoid. If that is the case there needs to be a wire from the ignition switch start terminal which makes its way to the solenoid terminal first going through various safety switches.

Yep, ( in that diagram) relay "K1" should have a feed from it ( pin 87 ) to the starter,
pin 30 will go to the starter ignition switch (start).

I have a 1989 650 John Deere compact tractor and it is frying the fuse wire before it even try to start. I have looked around to make sure that there is no bare wires tried to start it when it was a little bit cold hit the glow plug fried. Replaced it then tried to just start it and when it hit the crank position fried again need some help on this one

Big 1959 and CarlieIsaiah, the pic shown of Big's starter may help you both. That is an unsafe condition. Make sure (no, make **** sure) that the cable from the battery + to that largethreaded lug has a thin insulating washer between it and the starter case. Also check to see that hole in the terminal of that + cable is the correct size to just fit the large threaded lug, not worn over-sized. Then, get a 90 degree rubber boot to fit onto the cable and over the lug and wires. The large threaded lug should have once small wire on it sandwiched OVER the battery cable. That small wire go back to the ignition switch "run" pole, then back to the rectifier -- this serving to send charge current to battery. The start position of the ignition switch has its wire going to the exposed small pole of your starter, it connects with a small round eyelet terminal and small bolt AND also needs a smaller rubber 90 degree boot to be safe. If you still need the wire colors, I can go take a look at my 1982 650 which is locked up in its garage right now. I will be using it tomorrow. I recently replaced the generator, the rectifier, and the 6 pin connector at the rectifier and had to trace all of this. But, I do not remember the colors off hand, but all of mine are original colors. BTW, it is not particularly safe, but you can start your tractor by jumping a wire from that small terminal to the large one, or bridge them with a screwdriver. Make sure it is in neutral and brake set firmly and PTO off and hydraulics down. You are at your own risk with that short cut (pun intended).

if you will google denso number 028000-5730 you will see what your starter should look like this unit was probably done in a rebuild shop it has worked i think for some time the little post coming out of side should have a bakealite cover to stop from jumping across. and the bolt coming out the bottom should be just below the single post that has nothing on it now. i also agree if the post coming out the bottom is from the battery if not grounded will start frying stuff the bad part is this housing where these are go directly to the solenoid that is whats inside that housing if you wish to see inside there is a cover held on by 3 screws when comes apart there is a plunger with spring that is not attached to anything but when it powers will pull the plunger that has a contact disc built onto it if it or the two contacts are burnt they will also cause same problem they can get worn to a point they will ground out the positive cable attached please repost if we can help
