I am taking delivery of my L 3130 with 723 FEL on the 20th, I am wondering if a tooth bar is a worthy attachment.. I have pretty rocky soil... any feedback appreciated

worthy?

Oh yes! In terms of breaking material up, very useful. Not only piles, but ground material too. Backdragging, one could find it used as a quick rake.

Mine is on the FEL full-time.

If you do a search on toothbars on TBN you will find: 1) lots of posts, 2) almost all very enthusiastic about adding a toothbar if you are digging or brush clearing. Only real negative would be if you are primarily moving piles of dirt, gravel etc as it would not add anything but extra weight (about 70-100 lbs) to the bucket.

I bought one for my 2410. It's not attached alot but when a project calls for it, the difference is tremendous.
It's on and off with 4 bolts, so if you aren't moving soil or the like that calls for that attachment, just leave it off!!

[I am wondering if a tooth bar is a worthy attachment]

I had a toothbar on the FEL bucket on my previous tractor (BX-23). The toothbar made a world of difference for digging, removing ground vines/brush/rocks, and gave the bucket some degree of protection when digging. My current tractor is an L3430 and I just purchased a new Woods toothbar for the bucket. I expect the toothbar will be more effective on the larger bucket when I continue my brush clearing efforts in the spring.

This may or may not be true depending on the loader.

I have noticed that my toothbar, due to its design, actually increases the length of the bottom of the bucket. The net affect is that the bucket will hold more than it does without the toothbar installed. (mine comes off/on in a couple minutes)

A weak loader would not benefit from added bucket capacity though...with mine I do notice the difference and like having the toothbar on most of the time.

H & H made mine, which is a little more expensive than some of the others out there, but very durable due to its design, and makes the lower lip indestructable on my little tractor (B2910 kubota).

I can tell you, by far the most cost effective investment I have ever made in any attachment has been my tooth bar…..

Attached is one of many “rocks” I have dug out using nothing more than my FEL with the tooth bar.

Right. What do you classify as a boulder? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And the question of the toothbar, it saves your bucket edge too!

A toothbar is great for digging into compacted earth. I'm using mine to excavate for a paver block walkway.

I have a big pile of fill dirt left over from the excavation work last summer on my new house. I find that I get better results without the toothbar when digging into this pile, moving the dirt around, and touching up the grading around my foundation and elsewhere on the property. Fortunately it's a Markham toothbar held on with two 1/2" bolts so it's a snap to get it on and off the bucket.

I also agree. Best investment made.

Why did I wait so long?

I found that in 'tight' soil with occasional to frequant imbedded stones (4-6" sized) the cutting edge would either deflect the bucket or even totally stop it from loading.

With the tooth bar I now ALWAYS get a full scoop of soil.

Also it sure is easy to pop out the 10-12" rocks now.

In my opinion a tooth bar is a BIG must.

Drawbacks are however, loading, say, gravel or loose material without damaging the site.
Loss of bucket backgrading ability.
However my tooth bar remouves with 2 1/2" bolts when I need to.

Shucks, a CUT with a tooth bar=almost a bobcat!

Around these parts, that is considered a pebble.... I have seen excavators pull out rocks the size of pick up trucks and larger. They have to drape them with blasting blankets and blow them apart just to move them. When they are installing water and sewer lines, there is no going around them. They must come out.

Dusty I dont know what you call a rock. According to my dozer operator there is only one rock in Arkansas it starts in Oklahoma and ends in Tennessee

I wouldn't buy a Kubota for boulders....We have solid granite in these parts but most of the big stuff on my property has already been dug out

Here's picture a 60 inch woods toothbar....

Really helpds save the edge of your bucket....Can be taken off in 5 minutes...I keep the wrenches in my toolbox under the seat

Own a L3130 with 723 Front End loader. After about a year, purchase a toothbar from Markham Welding (hope spelling is correct). They have a tremendous website. Easy on-Easy off, if you can lift around 70 pounds. Cost was around $350. A great tool to have for certain projects.......I would highly recommend a tooth bar.
