My new-to-me (but made with USA steel) deck-over equipment trailer had the spare just sitting on top of the lid to the built in a-frame storage box. Needless to say that is a bad spot, having to either remove, or lift up a very heavy tire, anytime I want to get something out of the storage area.

I was wondering if anyone has thought of, or made use of a pickup's style spare tire winch/carrier idea, and mounted one to a trailer and just kept the spare between the main frame rails? I would think it would make it more theft resistant, as most opportunistic criminals would not even think to look there. and keeping it out of the sun is a plus in the south.

I might have to work out where the lowering crank/tool goes, (may have to drill hole in main frame, but they pierce the frames on the lower height deckovers, so I am not really worried about one hole of less than an inch)

So am I a creative genius, or a complete fool? I can not believe I am the first to have thought of this. I know some tractor trailers carry a spare under the deck, but that is just a carrier, not a winch/lowering system as far as I know. And I doubt most t/t drivers would be changing a tire themselves, they would call a service provider.

What issues might I have, what am I missing, or why would this be a bad idea?

thanks in advance to all who help.

What’s your percentage of local trips vs farther away? I’d take the thing off and just put it in the back of the truck for farther trips.

Properly secured, of course!

It's been done before. If you have space you might look at placing it under the deck on the outside of the passenger side frame rail, that way you have room for a 2nd storage box that is located under the deck on the driver's side.

I think it’s a neat idea and it wouldn’t be too difficult to do. I think trailer companies don’t do it because their margins are tight and most people wouldn’t want to pay for the expense for that particular feature. Most of us, myself included, just make a “do it yourself” square tube support that slips into one of the rail pockets and we call it done. But I like your idea.

I think that is a great idea, I really do. I HATE trailer spares as there is never a spot for them that's not in the way no matter where they are including in the pickup bed. (But a "creative genius" ???)
Advantages, many.
Disadvantages, tire will look like ***** in no time from dirt and rust, road grime etc., underneath may induce bouts of cussing to remove when needed on the road in the dark, checking pressure on the spare.
Let us know after the fact what you learned with pictures please.

I'd call that a good idea, and also a box for wheel chocks and a good hydraulic jack and 2x blocking. That would leave the tongue box open for chains, straps and binders.

I bought a couple stake mount spare tire holders. You can move them around to any stake pocket and remove them if needed. I wanted to mount a couple stake pockets to the front of the trailer so I can move them more out of the way. Works good.

Here is one.

I like the idea, but I am guessing you do not have a deck over, as most deck overs are 96 or 102" wide, you could not use this on any of the side rails.(from what I can see you could not face the tire inward as the tire would hit the deck before the stake was inserted in the pocket) I could add a pocket to the front, but then my A-frame storage cover/hatch would not fully open. But again thank you, I was not aware of that option.

Whatever you do keep in mind that accessing it on the side of a busy road can be a issue. Also if you pull of the side of a road often times there is a bit of a slope and less clearance under the trailor.

The idea of the cable to hold up the tire sounds ok and should work safely.
