Really not a "nix" term or ism either and nix has always ruled the web (so perhaps it's a winders term?)...or...possibly confusing "dots" (.) before a / (slash) every dot before a slash raises up one directory... i.e., it's really just shorthand for coders linking files etc. residing in a different directory...
for instance...look at the URI in the address tray of your browser...everything following a / is in a directory above root...
