Generally true, but this is overstating the point, a bit. The Washingtons were neighbors with the Fairfax family, who were the wealthiest family in Virginia at the time. The patriarch (William) of the family took a liking to George, who had worked for him when he was very young, as George's father had already passed away and the kids were helping with the family income. Due to George's hard work and attentiveness, he earned a recommendation from Fairfax that helped land his first military appointment, an assignment that was way above what his experience would have earned him without this important neighbor's good word. There is a huge misconception over George Washington.
He was no one, till he married in to money. That money came from his wife that inherited a great deal. And she was on her second marriage to George, having been married prior to the insanely rich family of the Custis family, and George got from her, near every thing they ever owned, but mostly Martha owned it. This is the first President of the United States.
If I recall, both George and his brother married daughters of William Fairfax, but it was only due to their unique industriousness that they earned this privilege of marrying way above their station. I wouldn't say anything was handed to them. George was lucky throughout his life, but only because he worked very hard to put himself in places where that luck could happen.
