Coming up on the 50 hour service, was planning on swapping all ~12 gal of hydraulic fluid however every place I can find it is charging near the cost of fluid(~$150) just to ship!

Nearest dealer is about an hour away, it's a total pain to burn two hours on a weekday but I'm having a hard time paying nearly the same cost in shipping as for the fluid.
When I changed my filter at the 50 hour change, I spun the old one off and spun the new one on as quickly as I could and only lost about a quart.

OR do as I did. Any tricky "plug it with a cork" or "use your shop vac scenario" looked like a direct avenue to a true disaster for me. I got a LARGE Tupper Ware blanket storage bin and used it. My tractor holds 16+ gallons of hydraulic fluid. Pull the plug - let it all drain into the Tupper Ware tub - replace the plug - change both hydraulic filters - put the saved hydraulic fluid back into the tractor.

No tricks, no ruined shop vac, only a couple of drips of hydraulic fluid on the ground - easy & simple.

Got to say, I've used the shop vac on the fill port of the hydraulic for the few times I've changed the hydraulic filter. It works.

Changing the fluid when it's not necessary is expensive. The little 1 gallon shop vacs work well.
