OK. By way of introducing this thread:

One week a month I deliver a free paper to a vast area of north-central Fl. On my route I stop at several tractor stores and I see a lot of tractors.

I have been following several thread lately and some of them have had to do with buying a new tractor. In fact, we had been in the market for a new TLB, but that has changed. During the price discussions, many have asked what a good price was for the model they were looking at and got answers. TBN members are very helpful.

Though the prices vary a bit, they have been with in a tolerable range for the tractors in question.

One thread had a discussion of size recommendation and it was determined that his needs would be a bit "pricey". (he needed something in the 70-80 hp range)

Well, in most of these threads, it is us little guys talking and offering advise, and yes, after today I consider 80hp little.

At one of the Greene dealers they had a nice looking tractor parked near the front door. I asked the guy at the counter, just out of curiosity, what does that tractor cost. He did not know - he is the parts guy. However, the man inside one of the sales offices asked me what tractor I was asking about. I told him it was the one outside, near the door. "Which one?" he still wanted to know. So I told him, "The 8345".

He then proceeded to tell me that that tractor is about $205 (that is $205,000). He then explained that it is 300+HP and that they make it all the way up to 600HP.

Later today, when I was in another JD dealer, I was telling him about the tractor and the price. When I told him it was a 8345 he said that the price was about right and that the "new" numbering scheme for JD has meaning (unlike in years past when the numbers didn't really tell you much about the tractor)

He said that the tractor is a series 8 with 345hp (about 300hp at the PTO). He also told me that one with 600hp would cost about $250,000 (or more, depending on options)

I'm sure there are some of the big-boys on here. But for most of us, aren't we glad that we don't have to pay anything near that for what we use.

Yep those big boys more than pocket change, but to fellows buy them time is money and money is time.

Our renters use 8000 Series John Deere and those aren't even considered "big" in this area. Sure glad I don't have to pay for them.

Sounds cheap enough to me...if you have the need for it then price is no object.:D

Back about 10 years ago my uncle who farms bought all new equipment. He got a NH Combine with both a bean and corn head. I think they are 18' heads. He also got a NH 150ish HP tractor with cab and another around 275is HP. Not sure of the numbers. He also got one of the big 8 wheel JD articulating tractors with well over 500 HP. Again, I do not remember the numbers but he spent about 1 million at the time. Crazy.

DP - Is that a Nissan Titan that pulls that boat?

Yes, these numbers awe me as well but....It is all relative.

In short, a man with an income of say $50,000 a year can maybe afford a $20,000 dollar tractor.

A man who has income of $1.5 million can afford $500,000 for his tractor(s).

What really is amazing to me is how many people have a $20,000 tractor that can afford a house worth $1.5 million.!!

Frankly I would be more amazed to see the guy who puts a 1.5 millon dollar house in a 1500 acre corn field and actually goes out and jumps on a tractor of any value. :D

These big machines aren't the toys/tools we non-agricultural users enjoy. This is working equipment. I don't think anyone would be surprised at the prices of machine tools (CNC machines can easily exceed $500K) or presses (injection molding press prices normally exceed $250k).
So, no sticker shock...just the price of doing business.

I agree with Roy on this. One operator can work one row at a time or 24 rows at a time, easy to see which is more productive. I am more impressed with the accuracy of the new gps systems on the modern field tractors.
