Interesting. There is a good description in James Michener's novel "Hawaii".

I cannot imagine the stones on the guys who did it first in those wooden boats. I'll stick to reading about it.

Side note, if you like historical fiction and a meaty book, Michener writes a good book. He basically takes a region of the world and writes about its history from geological formation to present day. He finished "Hawaii" in 1957, that's when the story ended.

I watched the entire clip. That would certainly be more than a thrill of a lifetime. I take it back - I wouldn't get sea sick - I would be too scared.

If you like interesting reads along these lines, you could try "The Last Grain Race" by Eric Newby his account of the last fleet of sailboats bringing wheat from Australia to England by circumnavigating the globe.

He also wrote "A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush", up in Northern Pakistan / Afghanistan.
